Partha Chatterjee is professor of political science at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta, and professor of anthropology at Columbia University. His books include The Politics of the Governed: Reflections on Popular Politics in Most of the World, A Possible India: Essays in Political Criticism, and The Nation and Its Fragments: Colonial and Postcolonial Histories.

Nivedita Menon is professor of political theory at the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University. She is the author of Recovering Subversion and editor of Gender and Politics in India.

So-so

I am on the fence with this one. I unfamiliar with author read because of title. Found it dry not too exciting. What I mean by that it didn't flow in my opinion. Every sentence was work. As if writing about a sexy boss and worker building up for the "Big O" was work almost painful not funny. Your call.

About the Author
Renowned Wizard Oberon Zell-Ravenheart is the author of the best-selling Grimoire for the Apprentice Wizard and Companion for the Apprentice Wizard. He and his wife Morning Glory rediscovered the long-lost secret of the Unicorn in 1976, and in 1980, created the first of several living Unicorns, which became a worldwide sensation. In 1985, Oberon organized a diving expedition to New Guinea and the Coral Sea which solved the age-old mystery of the Mermaid, presenting his findings to the International Society of Cryptozoology.He lives in Sonoma County, California.

A serious study in beasts, excellent reference material

Informative book, needs better editing

First let me say, A Wizard's Bestiary is probably one of the most informative books relating to cryptids, myths, and other supernatural beasties out there. It doesn't just focus on Greek or Egyptian mythology as most do, nor on north American cryptids. Instead, it delves into various countries and belief systems, shining a spotlight on well known and obscure creatures.

However, the information comes at a price. The editor must have been asleep at the wheel, because every couple dozen pages or so there's a misspelled word, a word omitted, a word the runs into the drawings on the pages, or what have you. Almost every error is in the first section, the Glossary titled "A Magickal Menagerie" and some of these problems are due to the positioning of the artwork. In the actual encyclopedic section, the creatures are split amongst groups and spoken about in an interesting and in-depth manner, some more than others of course (sea monsters alone have a VAST wealth on them). While a few sections have wording that might seem a bit ego-leaning, those are few and far between (the author for example, seems dead-set on lake monsters being slugs, and goes so far as to say something akin to "I refuse to accept them as anything else," as if it's their place and only theirs to deem what is acceptable or not. Perhaps this is just how it comes across to myself, I'll leave it up to the other readers to decide. Lastly, I think it's a bit unusual that many of the art pieces go uncredited. While some are from clipart or other sources and some DO have their artist given their do, the author states themselves that they "raided google" for many, and therefore quite a few go without credit (this could have been remedied either by asking around on the sites they were found, or by hiring a few artists to create new pieces for the creatures).

On a positive note, another area where the book stands out is at the end of each encyclopedic section, where it says how one can find media that star some of the creatures therein; particularly via film but also in book or even video game forms. The haiku at the start of each letter for the menagerie are a neat touch as well.

All in all the book is pretty good, but the editing mistakes, some of the near-hubris level of a few sections (luckily only a scant few), the lack of credit for many pieces, and the art getting in the way of the wording take away from what would be an otherwise GREAT book. Perhaps in a future publication these editing issues will be fixed, as this reviewer hopes. One suggestion could be perhaps to do the menagerie section in a column-form: one side of the page for the creatures descriptions, the other for the artwork. Although this would make the book slightly longer than usual, it's one of many possible ways to improve that section.

part cookbook / mostly memories

this book is as described by Amazon. The book is well-made = quality paper and binding. Many photographs with a storyline traveling throughout the various regions of the Philippines.

As it turns out, this book focuses more on the regions and the author's memories in those regions. there's maybe about 50 to 75 recipes in this book (out of 232 pages).

If you're looking for a solid Filipino cookbook filled with recipes, than this is not the cookbook for you. After looking at the recipes, there weren't very many recipes that I found appealing and would want to make at home. In a sense, it left me feeling like Filipino food was lackluster, which I know is NOT TRUE. Filipino food offers many outstanding dishes, but I did not find those recipes in this cookbook.

I would not have purchased this book if I could have previewed it first at my local public library.

An Intimate Look at Filipino Cuisine and the Philippines

I have been going to the restaurants run by Amy Besa and Romy Dorotan for many years, starting way back at Cendrillon in SOHO, and now at their wonderful Purple Yam in Brooklyn, but I only just found out that they have a book. Having been to the Philippines many times, starting with my US Navy days in the late 60s to being married to a Filipina for the last twenty years, I am quite familiar with Filipino cuisine. This book is just delightful. The stories that are told are so personal an so educational that I have a much better understanding of Filipino Cuisine and Filipinos. Some of the stories are similar to stories my wife has of growing up in the Philippines, and the rest are wonderful additions to my knowledge of my wife's life before I knew her. Then there are the recipes. I have an extensive cookbook section in my library, and I don't think any of them have better descriptions of methods and ingredients than the ones in this book. All in all this book is a must for anyone with any interest in the Philippines or Filipino cooking. How many cookbooks do you actually read cover to cover? With this one you probably will.

Filipino cookbook with history, stories from families about local and reinvented Filipino Cuisines

One of the cookbooks that I will cherish and use for a lifetime. I was captivated by the stories of 2 chefs who opened their American dream to make it into a reality. I was longing for a cookbook that had traditional and heirloom recipes from families that had their signature dishes from provinces in the Philippines like Vigan, Pampanga, Laguna,etcetera. This cookbook contains the history, stories from these memorable recipes and why they last for a long time for many Filipinos and other nationalities when they were presented at Cendrillon and at Purple Yam restaurant in New York. I really appreciate how the chapters were presented with introduction of ingredients, categorized into different parts of the Filipino (Spanish )meal - Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch, Merienda (Snack time) and Dinner.
If this book has a James Beard Foundation award because of how this cookbook was presented and the recipes are timeless for the Filipinos and those who are curious and wants to go back to history in the Philippines. Some are traditional, and others have fusion of 2 recipes or cuisines. I recommend this book to anyone who is curious trying Filipino cuisine. I say that Filipino cuisine is often misrepresented because most foreigners feel alienated about how we cook our foods; however, we should have an open mind, heart and tastebuds to educate what Filipino cuisine is all about. I know everyone who has tried Filipino food will often associate with adobo, sinigang, lugaw or arroz caldo, pancit, turon and many common fare. But for those who are curious to go deeper into local Filipino foods that are found in the provinces and are cherished by many -- I think this is the book for you.

About the Author
Alessandro Biffignandi was born in Rome in 1935 and developed an interest in drawing and cartoons at a very young age. He attended art college, where he became fascinated by cinema�posters, and on graduating he became an apprentice with the great Italian poster illustrator Averardo Ciriello. Biffigandi was head-hunted by the studio of Augusto Favelli, which�at that time was Italy's biggest producer of film posters. In the 1960s, he moved to Milan and created cover artwork for the D’Ami studio, an art agency that produced comic strips for the UK�market, including the famous Fleetway war comics. From 1970 until the early 1980s, he produced hundreds of high-quality covers for the adult comics titles published by Edifumetto—including�Zora la Vampira, Cimiteria,�and�Biancaneve.� Biffigandi then left the world of comics to concentrate on magazine and book illustration.

Another serving of wild Italian pulp art

Last year I read and reviewed Sex and Horror: The Art of Emanuele Taglietti. I enjoyed it and when I learned the publisher was releasing a book on Allesandro Biffignandi, another Italian artist who produced covers for the erotic horror comics of the 1970's and 1980's, I decided to check it out. Biffignandi's work is similar to Taglietti's (indeed, both contributed to the same magazines). Worth noting is the feature Candida la Marchessa, involving a noblewoman turned thief after her fortune is lost. She comes across as a more sinister version of American pulp's Domino Lady. Cimiteria is a beautiful revived corpse who gets into supernatural adventures with her hunchback lover. Biffignandi also did erotic parodies of Zorro and classic literary works. All in all, if you like wild art that combines sex, nudity, violence and horror, this will be something you will want to see.

I love this book

I love this book, and the first book in the series featuring the works of Taglietti. These books collect the best of what the 1970s and 80s horror fumetti have to offer, considering the interior art is not worth remembering. But the covers in this book, by Biffignandi, are just amazing. Not for children or the squeamish, this book is nonetheless a beautiful tribute.

Kind of unrealistic for HS teachers, I thought

There are some good ideas in this book. However, I thought it was very unrealistic that the key to the author's approach is an immense amount of research on every child. This could certainly work at the elementary level, but at high school, with the enormous number of different kids we see each day, it doesn't seem at all realistic.

About the Author
As Principal Advisor Enterprise Architecture, Marc Lankhorst is responsible for Novay's activities on enterprise, business and IT architecture. His expertise and interests�range from enterprise architecture and business process management to service orientation and model-driven software development.�Marc headed the project that developed the ArchiMate� standard for architecture modelling, described in the book ‘Enterprise Architecture at Work’ (2nd ed., Springer 2009). He is�a board member of the�Netherlands Architecture Forum (NAF), one of the editors of Via Nova Architectura, and� a TOGAF� 9-certified enterprise architect. He holds a M.Sc. from the University of Twente and a Ph.D. from the University of Groningen.

The Archimate language in detail

If you want to learn how to do Enterprise Architecture modeling, this book is for you. The book covers the Archimate language in detail.

The book starts off with a nice introduction to Enterprise Architecture. It explains the internal and external drivers and then goes on to introduce the current state of Enterprise Architecture in the industry.

It introduces EFQM, ISO 9001, COBIT, ITIL, CMMI, IEEE 1471-200, Zachman Framework, TOGAF, and MDA. There is a short introduction to each, but it is enough to put them in context.

The book the talks briefly about the description languages which include IDEF, BPMN, Testbed, ARIS, UML, and ADLs.

Next there is a nice chapter named Foundations. Foundations outline the fundamental ideas on which the author's approach is based. Topics include architectural complexity, describing enterprise architectures, and pictures, Models, and semantics.

The last chapter before heading full steam ahead into modeling is Communication of Enterprise Architectures. The book then has chapters on guidelines for modelling, viewpoints and visualisation, architecture analysis, architecture support, and tool support.

The book then has three nice size case studies and wraps up with a chapter on what is beyond enterprise architecture. The case studies are of sizable systems, they are not just three hello world projects.

This book is in full color which makes the diagrams easier to understand. The book is small so it is easy to keep by your side. I like the writing style of the authors, they make it an easy and enjoyable read.

This book has tons of diagram examples in it. I use Archimate when I do Enterprise Architecture models. I use SPARX EA, but there is also a free tool available named Archi: Archimate Modelling (just Google it).

All in all if you are an architect you owe it to yourself to check out this book and give Archimate a shot.

Excellent Modelling Approach

This is first in its kind book that tackles enterprise architecture modeling with a holistic approach. Book presents a unified modeling approach for enterprise architecture and simplifies the relationship between architecture domains with a simple Meta model. It also deals with communication and analysis aspect nicely.

This does not provide any details about what architecture development process should be nor it gives any insight on choosing an architecture framework. So set your expectation before buying. AS book title says it is about modeling, communication and Analysis.

Great book for practical enterprise architectural modeling!

This book is not TOO big! and TOO thick!. That's very easy to read. I like many communication and modeling techniques so much.

This book also contains lots of good and clear model images which represents the various architectural views. All sample models for each architectural views was created by using ArchiMate modeling notation that the author wants to introduce in the book. I like the ArchiMate because it's easier than UML. But don't be worried about learning the ArchiMate, the notations are very close to UML. So, I can continue to use UML and BPMN with my job unless some clients prefer to use ArchiMate.

The author also explains technique for communicate the EA to various stakeholders and explains how to handle the level of abstractions. Another part of the book is the analysis technique, the technique for analyzing the models. This topic helps me so much for checking the models (both verifying and validating). Is it good enough? That's the question I always ask myself while modeling.

I just made decision to plan to use the book as a modeling guideline for my client soon.

This book is very practical for EA modeling!!! So, as the book said... it's for modeling, communication and analysis. It's a modeling-orientation!
