Good progressive Christmas Songbook
By Kristin King, Author
I bought this for my sons and found it right on par for their level of piano. I like this series b/c of the mix of songs they put in each book at each level. I could be improved with an accompaniment for more mature player to do together.

Great to have Bastien leveled Christmas songs!
By C. Starr
I was delighted to find a book of Bastien leveled Christmas carols! WONDERFUL to know that my daughter could play them at her current skill level. Nice variety of songs. She's in the other Bastien level 2 books, and this was right on par. She learned two well and others a little in December. Nothing was out of her league.

A Lot of Song for a Short Season
By C.N.O.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with this book. It's okay and is what it's supposed to be. My only thing is that for a level 2 book, most level 2 players aren't playing more than 2-4 songs in a week. There are many to choose from, but it's probably not likely you'll get through the whole book before the end of the season.

Tighty whities or boxer shorts?
By J. Chambers
"Do Monsters Wear Undies?" is another illustrated rhyming story by Mark Smith in a similar vein to his earlier monster book, "Spark." Aimed primarily at preschoolers whose parents read bedtime stories to them, "Do Monsters Wear Undies?" reveals that monsters do indeed wear underwear, but only on certain days of the week. It also answers the burning question: tighty whities or boxer shorts?

Kids will enjoy the rhyming text and colorful illustrations, and these monsters are pretty friendly, so there's nothing too scary in the story. It's also fun to look for Clyde the Purple Monster, who loves to hide out in every scene.

"A Cute, Silly, Rhyming Story Little Children Will Love"
By Nancy L. Silk, Author/Reviewer
First I'd like to make a note for Kindle Fire users. The wonderful illustrations in this book can be enlarged by tapping twice on the picture. I had not been aware before now that this was an option, and it is one that children may which to become interactive with the reader. This will make the young child have more fun, and perhaps giddy, with joyfulness. The monster, Clyde, is the storyteller here and makes it fun for children to locate him in the numerous illustrations. Sometimes he hides really well! There is a colorful calendar to help children learn numbers, names of days, and weeks. The page descriptions are fun to read with rhyming words. Children will laugh out loud at the colorful undies that the monsters choose to wear! Cuddle up with your child, and enjoy this book!

My grandaughter giggled and giggled ...
By Alex S
So, do you lay awake at night wondering if the monsters in your closet wear underwear?

In case you do, Mark Smith has written this cute book, just to answer the question. I read it through with my granddaughter - who quickly picked up on the words (she is just out of first grade), and she giggled and giggled and giggled.

We always scream when she walks down the hall without her clothes, so we did the exact same thing when we saw the monsters running naked on the page! From that moment on, she was entranced. We read through the book twice and she wanted to read it herself the third time through. But she couldn't stop giggling long enough.

Monsters in underwear tickled her funny bone. The only thing is now she is talking about whether dogs, cats, birds, and other critters should wear undies. She loves looking at us and pointing and saying "You are wearing underwear!" I may have created a monster.

Being a girl, she really didn't pick up on tighty whities and boxers.

Great fun for kids with a real sense of humor - what child doesn't want to talk about that taboo subject - undies, not to mention the word butt!

Edited ... it has been some time since she originally read the book on my iPad. But whenever we are together and she is wanting me to read her a story, this continues to be at the top of the list of ones she requests.

We also use it for days of the week, because of the Sundays and Mondays, it naturally ties into helping her understand how they all work together.

As Clary uncovers more about her family’s past, she finds an ally in mysterious Shadowhunter Sebastian. From School Library Journal
Grade 8 Up–In the two previous books, Clary learns that she is a member of a race of demon-hunters and that she has the special ability to create new versions of the runes that give these Shadowhunters their power. Her mother has been hiding the truth from her for years to protect her from her father, Valentine, a cult-leader-turned-villain who is seeking to gain control over the Shadowhunters by obtaining the three Mortal Instruments. Now, Valentine has only one Mortal Instrument left to find, and the Shadowhunters must ally with the despised Downworlders, including vampires, werewolves, and fairies, to prepare their final defense. The question of whether Clary will be able to harness her unique abilities in time to help–and whether they will let her–is sidelined by the question of whether her love interest, Jace, is really her brother. Though the story is hampered by predictability and overblown writing, Clare continues her talent for mixing hip, modern humor with traditional fantasy, and fans eagerly awaiting the series conclusion should come away more than satisfied.–Eliza Langhans, Hatfield Public Library, MA

From Booklist
In search of a potion for her dying mother, Clary sneaks into the City of Glass and is immediately caught up in a life-and-death battle. As the children of the Moon (werewolves), Night (vampires), and Faerie gather for a war that will rend the heavens, Clary calls upon her untrained powers to control an angel who will save or destroy them all. Readers should be familiar with the first two installments in the Mortal Instruments series, but there is nevertheless plenty of romance, loss, honor, and betrayal to make the journey worthwhile. An experienced storyteller, Clare moves the plot quickly to a satisfying end. Grades 8-11. --Cindy Welch

Best of the series so far
By Nereid
This was the best book in the series so far as it answered a lot of my questions and a few secrets were revealed that explained the characters better. Clary, Simon and Jace got the validation they needed and the story did not focus on just Jace and Clary and their tormented relationship. I wish someone would start training Clary so she could be a real shadow hunter and not just have to rely on her powers which are intermittent at best. Jace seemed the typical broody "woe is me" boyfriend and I much prefer him in the first book as he was more decisive and less moody than in this one. I do agree with another review that the plot line where they were thought to be brother and sister was unnecessary and only tainted the characters relationship going forward and it does play in the back of your mind sometimes. We were introduced to new characters and I really liked the Queen of the Fairies. She hinted at other secrets that Valentine neglected to mention. Cold and Calculating she did lack empathy yet once her condition was met, Clary was released and the love triangle was no more. Some plot lines were predictable and I would have liked a better fight scene for the evil Valentine and Sebastian but that is just my opinion. Simon has really come into his own and for a minor character he is quite interesting as there is a lot going on with him and I am curious to find out where he goes from here and who will he end up with. Overall it was a better book and although this was a trilogy in the beginning I am going to see where the characters go from here.

Well done Cassandra Clare.
By YA Book Reader
It goes without saying that I am a lover of books. Stories, characters, and delicious prose...well...these are things that I throw myself into. My shelves are filled with countless books that i have read and loved, stories that I have enjoyed reading.
I have never enjoyed reading a book as much as I enjoyed this one. Never.

It's a scary thing when you get to the final book in a series or trilogy that you particularly care about. There's a certain amount of apprehension involved, correlating directly to your emotional involvement to the story and characters. Its tricky for the author to wrap things up in a way that is true to the characters, consistent with the themes of the previous books, ties up the major and minor story arcs, and is still enjoyable to read. I've never read the final book in any series that managed to seamlessly do all of those things. City of Glass did.

The characters in a story like this should be expected to change, to be affected by the events around them, and to react to them in some way. This was handled fantastically. Well done Cassandra Clare.

I loved the danger and intrigue and romance…
By Jesi Lea Ryan
In an effort to save her mother, Clary journeys to the City of Glass to find a potion which will wake her up. The Clave has also called the Lightwoods and Jace to the city to testify regarding the events that occurred on Valentine’s ship. Jace is concerned that if the Clave knows what Clary is capable of, they will exploit her. He tricks her into staying home, but of course, she follows anyway and gets herself into trouble. Jace tries to be mean to her in order to force her away before the Clave finds out she is in the city. Hurt by his rejection, Clary accepts assistance from Sebastian, a handsome, let slightly creepy guy whose motives are questionable.

The Clave is also interested in how Simon, a vampire, is now able to go out in the sunlight. They throw him in a dungeon-like jail where he makes friends with a strange prisoner held in the next cell.

Now that Valentine has both the Mortal Cup and the Mortal Sword, everyone is anticipating him coming to Idris to capture the Mortal Mirror. It is known to be in Idris, but unfortunately, no one knows where it is. When Valentine threatens to attack the city, the Clave must decide whether to accept the help of the Downworlders against him.

I loved this book! I loved the danger and intrigue and romance… The only thing that was a bit irritating is that I figured out the ending way early and then had to watch the characters slog along until they figured it out. Even so, I still think this might be my favorite book in the series so far. One of the characters gets killed in the book, and it is heartbreaking. Several plot lines ended, giving me satisfaction, but I can see a few plotlines which will need to be resolved in the next book.

Overall, I give City of Glass…

In her elegant, fascinating tour of creativity and the brain, Nancy Andreasen, professor of psychiatry at the University of Iowa and the winner of the National Medal of Science, shows us that creativity is not the same as intelligence nor the same as skill. Rather, we discover, the essence of creativity is to shape the materials of life in new and unexpected ways.

Andreasen explores how the human brain achieves creative breakthroughs—in art, literature, music, and science—the role of patron or mentors, the possession of an omnivorous vision, the value of not having a “standard education,” and the question of “genius and insanity.”

The author shows is what extraordinary creators such as Mozart, Henri Poincar, and Coleridge, said about creating and how they reflect special qualities of creative people and the creative process. She describes her fascinating interview with the playwright Neil Simon in which he discussed how his mind works. Andreasen’s studies of participants in the Iowa Writer’s Workshop suggest that creativity may be inherited and sometimes associated with mental disorders, through neither is necessary for creativity to flourish.

The author proposes that creativity can and should be encouraged and offers advice to nurture it in both children and adults

Starred Review. How does one define extraordinary creativity? Is creative genius a product of nature or nurture? And can those of us who are less creative enhance the creative capacity in ourselves and others? Andreasen (The Broken Brain), editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Psychiatric Association, brings neuroscience to bear in providing insight and expert analysis of the connections between extraordinary creativity, mental illness, intelligence and the social environment. The complex subject matter is punctuated with intriguing research, such as Andreasen's Iowa Writer's Workshop study examining the relationship between creativity and psychopathology; a study of London taxi drivers showing that their need for extensive memory of the city leads to a larger hippocampus; and a study of members of symphony orchestras that found increased gray matter in Broca's area. These studies lead Andreasen to conclude that "extraordinary creativity" is the result of neural processes that "differ qualitatively as well as quantitatively" from those of other people. The author's passion and admiration for creative genius and the arts—not surprising given her Ph.D. in Renaissance English literature—is evidenced in her exploration of such great minds as Mozart, da Vinci, Michelangelo and Tchaikovsky. And quotations from introspective accounts by mathematician Henri Poincar, chemist Friedrich Kekul, Stephen Spender and Neil Simon vividly describe mental activities that are anything but ordinary. Andreasen leaves us with hope that the potential exists to enhance the creative capacity in our children and in ourselves. Photos and illus. (Nov.)

From Scientific American
What is the nature of creativity? What conditions foster it? What is going on inside the brain of a Mozart or a Shakespeare during the creative process? And is there a relation between creativity and mental illness, as often posited? Science thus far has produced only sketchy answers to these fascinating questions. The Creating Brain is a worthwhile inquiry into the subject and a reminder of how little is known.

Nancy C. Andreasen, a psychiatrist and neuroscientist at the University of Iowa who started her career as a Renaissance English scholar, argues that some characteristics of creative people—such as openness to new experiences and sensitivity to sensory inputs—may also make them more prone to mental and emotional problems. Her study of Iowa Writers Workshop participants shows a correlation between mood disorders and creativity, and other scientists have found similar tendencies in studies of literary and artistic types. Such research, however, has not shown a suspected link between artistic creativity and schizophrenic symptoms. Andreasen, who tends to draw conclusions primarily from her own work, notes that she is performing a study to see if any such tendency exists among especially creative scientists.

Despite the paucity of evidence, Andreasen suggests that creativity arises largely from the "association cortex"—parts of the frontal, parietal and temporal lobes that integrate sensory and other information. This idea, however, has just begun to be researched; Andreasen, again, relies heavily on her own study, this one done with positron-emission tomography (PET) scans of people’s brains during free association.

In pondering the topic of genius, Andreasen points out that certain historical times and places have produced a bounty of brilliance. Among these "cradles of creativity" she lists ancient Athens, Renaissance Florence and mid- to late 19th-century Paris. Her list of factors spurring creative thought in such places is plausible if unsurprising: intellectual freedom, open competition, a critical mass of creative people, the presence of mentors and patrons, and some degree of economic prosperity.

Andreasen also provides tips for boosting creativity. For adults, she proposes exercises such as making close observations of a chosen item or imagining oneself to be someplace or someone else. Her suggestions for kids are mainly common sense, including less television exposure and more music and outdoor activity. The Creating Brain contains much of interest, even if breakthroughs lie mostly in the future.

A first-order approximation to a neuroscience of creativity
By Dr. Lee D. Carlson
It is accurate to say that there has been more creative energy released in the last twenty-five years than any than the last twenty-five hundred. This is due not only to the number of people that are actually alive now, but also to the vast amount of knowledge that is readily available. Modern technology is responsible for the availability of this knowledge, and the technology itself was the result of human creativity and ingenuity. In addition, creative people can now communicate in ways they could not before, thanks to the rise of the Internet. Further, innovation has been strongly encouraged, not primarily by educational institutions and hierarchies, but by the business community. This is an interesting development, and one that shows every indication of continuing. The academy, which used to be considered a refugee camp for the creative mind, is no longer a place where one can pursue and develop original ideas without extreme difficulty.

In this highly interesting book, the author acknowledges that the environment is important in nurturing creativity, but she also wants to understand what mechanisms in the brain are responsible for it. An understanding of these mechanisms is extremely important, for it could point the way to better methods of enhancing creativity, either by using pharmaceuticals, with techniques from genetic engineering, or possibly with radical changes in the environment. The author is a neuroscientist, and not a philosopher, and so her analysis is based more on what is observed in the laboratory, and not mere speculations from the armchair. Her goal is to obtain a neuroscience of creativity, which considering the paucity of research in this area, is a goal that one hopes she (and other researchers) will succeed in reaching.

One of the first issues that the author addresses in the book is the relation (if any) between intelligence and creativity. Reviewing the history of the study between these two notions, and noting creative people have been equated with "geniuses", she concludes that, in general, one can conclude that a certain level of intelligence is needed to make original contributions, one needs another faculty of the brain in order to do so. It is not clear from this discussion whether she believes that this entails a modular view of the brain, i.e. one in which the brain consists of specialized modules for various tasks, one of these modules being for tasks requiring creativity.

The author is also careful to note that originality, creativity, or novelty are concepts that are dependent on the context in which ideas arise and in the perceived utility of these ideas. In this regard, she discusses the work of the psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, who believed in the existence of "true creativity". As summarized by the author, Csikszentmihalyi held that creativity should be understood in terms of the relationship between a `domain', which is a particular area of knowledge; a `field' that is a collection of experts in the domain, and a `person' who actually introduces novel ideas into the domain under the auspices of the field. Motivated by these considerations, the author holds that creativity must involve originality, utility, and must lead to product of some kind. These requirements, at least on the surface, are reasonable, but there are difficulties that arise when one attempts to check them for a particular idea or concept. One issue that immediately arises in this regard is attempting to check whether indeed the concept or creation is indeed novel, or whether it was actually contained in prior ideas or creations. The issue of whether an idea was actually contained in prior ones comes up quite frequently in the field of automated mathematical discovery, which seeks to emulate, in a machine, human creative mathematical ability. Because of the deductive nature of mathematics, the progression of ideas must follow logically from those in prior ones, i.e. in the premises. But the "new" ideas must be different in some sense from the ones that they are logically derived from. It can be become very debatable whether these ideas were indeed original, or whether they were merely "contained in the premises."

The book would not be complete of course if the author did not discuss in detail her ideas on the neuroscience behind creativity. For the general reader, she includes some elementary discussion on brain anatomy as a warm-up. In her brief treatment of the functions of the brain she mentions the current debate as to the executive functions of the brain, i.e. whether there is a central "executive" in the brain that decides what changes are to occur. As an alternative to a central authority, the author mentions the view of the brain as being a `self-organizing' system. This is currently a popular view of the brain among physicists, and for the author it helps to explain what she calls "ordinary creativity." However, the author clearly believes that something else is needed to explain "extraordinary" creativity: unconscious processes such as the process of `free association.' The author refers to her experimental work on using neuroimaging technology to find out which areas of the brain are active during free association. Her work is also dependent on the notion of `episodic memory', which she characterizes as memory that is linked to the personal experiences of the individual. Her neuroimaging experiments indicated that the association cortex was active when the subject was engaging in random unconscious free association. She is careful to admit though that a lot more research is needed to find the neural basis behind extraordinary creativity, but her suspicion is that it involves making links between objects or concepts that were not linked before. These associative links "run wild" and create new connections, resulting in a disorganized mental state. This motivates her to study the connection between creativity and insanity, a topic that she also discusses at some length in the book, along with hints and exercises that individuals can use to enhance their creativity.

A Tour of Creativity and the Mind
By STEPHEN PLETKO
+++++

QUESTION: What do Neil Simon (playwright), Mozart (music composer), and Friedrich Kekule (organic chemist) have in common?

ANSWER: Each was considered to be a creative genius.

This slim book by Dr. Nancy Andreasen attempts to explain how the above people and those like them create great works of art and come up with original ideas in the sciences. Does their creative genius reside in their neuroanatomy?

Andreasen explains more about her book:

"[My] book is primarily about extraordinary creativity. I wanted to write about how extremely gifted people have created things that have made our lives, our society, and our civilization richer and more beautiful."

Each of this book's six chapters is divided into subsections. Below I will give the title of the chapter (in upper case) and then give the titles of each subsection so as to give an overview of the entire book:

(1) THE NATURE OF CREATIVITY

The evolution of concepts of creativity; Creativity vs intelligence; Creativity and society: who decides?; What is creativity.

(2) UNDERSTANDING THE CREATIVE PERSON AND THE CREATIVE PROCSS

The scientific study of creativity; The creative person; The creative process; The case-study method and introspective descriptions of the creative process; Five introspective accounts (written by five people who represent extraordinary creativity).

(3) HOW DOES THE BRAIN CREATE?

Creativity and the brain; How does the brain think?; A primer of brain anatomy; The complexity of brain networks; The human brain as a self-organizing system; What is human thought?; Unconscious thought; The neural basis of extraordinary creativity.

(4) GENIUS AND INSANITY

Early explorations of genius and insanity: the anecdotal era; Improving diagnostic precision: the quantitative era; Is there a connection between creativity and schizophrenia?; Mental illness, creativity, and the brain; What are the effects of treating mental illness in creative people?

(5) WHAT CREATES THE CREATIVE BRAIN?

The role of nurture; Renaissance Florence as a Lab for the case study of nature and nurture (note that Andreasen's PhD is in Renaissance Literature); What kind of environment nurtures Creativity?; The role of nature: innate gifts and hereditary factors; Nature vs nurture: What creates the creative brain?

(6) BUILDING BETTER BRAINS

What is brain plasticity?; Plasticity and the creative brain; Ordinary creativity and extraordinary creativity; (Creative enhancing) mental exercises for adults; Tips for teaching tots; The creating brain: Quo Vadis.

If you peruse the above chapter subsections, you will find that the actual amount of neuroscience presented in this book is minimal. This is actually justified since the amount of research in this area is slim. What Andreasen does is actually concentrate on the mind rather than to analyze only the brain in order to understand creativity.

This book contains almost 35 black and white photos and illustrations, most of which I found interesting.

Don't worry! This book is easy to read. You don't have to have a PhD to understand it.

There are a few problems with this book. I will state three that I consider major ones:

(i) This book's title is "The Creating Brain: The Neuroscience of [Creative] Genius." As explained above, this book deals more with the mind than with the brain. As well, the neuroscience in this book is minimal. (Some people may get angry at this expecting the entire book to be about the brain and neuroscience. Personally, I was not angry but surprised.) I think a more accurate title would have been: "The Creating Mind: With Some Neuroscience Explaining Creative Genius."

(ii) The preface made me wince. Andreasen begins it with "When I was a kindergartener, I was IQ-tested and declared a genius." She then goes on and briefly describes her life with this label. Why?

(iii) The author attempts to imply that Sir Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein suffered from mental illness. Maybe she's justified in saying this since she has a degree in psychiatry. However, one of my degrees is in psychology and I would say that she is reading too much into Newton's and Einstein's idiosyncrasies.

Finally, I had a difficult time deciding how to rate this book. I decided I would rate this book on the more accurate title that I mentioned in (i) above. Some people might disagree with me on doing this but I feel the information presented in this book is important to know with respect to creativity.

In conclusion, despite some problems, I feel that this book does an adequate job in explaining extraordinary creativity.

Other reviewers seem to miss the point
By Derek J
In writing this book Dr. Andreasen had to consider her audience. This
book was written for a general audience, not the academic or medical community.
Therefore it must appeal to that end both in language and length of text.
I think that Dr. Andreasen is successful in her anecdotal approach to
writing this book. It keeps things interesting for those of us who might
have trouble sifting through the thousands and thousands of articles
published about creativity in medical or psychology journals. If you are looking for a summary of everything that has been written on the topic, you are looking for another book....and very likely one that would not be of much interest to a general audience.
Why anyone would expect a book that is obviously written for most
moderately educated people to be so conclusive, especially at this stage
in neuroscience, is beyond me. If one were to try to cover all aspects of
how people are creative, it would likely be longer than all of wikipedia.
I am an artist. For this book, I used a method usually reserved for viewing art, and
that is, assume everything is intentional. If the painter gives Mary a
long neck, it's not that he or she doesn't know how to paint a neck. It is because the painter is trying to emphasize something about the neck. Being a PhD in
English, I would gather that Dr. Andreasen knows a thing or two about
writing well. Being an accomplished scientist in addition, she also has an amazing capacity to make difficult topics easy to understand. Perhaps this skill-one that is quite rare in highly credentialed scholars like Dr. Andreasen-is one reason that several reviewers have perceived the book to be "too simple."
In this book Dr. Andreasen has selectively chosen some aspects of creativity the aspects of creativity that she finds most interesting. The most challenging aspect is the neuroscience of creativity. How does the brain actually work when it develops original ideas? The book is a tour de force in this respect. Few others could have written about this topic in such a knowledgeable but interesting and approachable way.

Fall of the Roman Republic (Penguin Classics), by Plutarch

Dramatic artist, natural scientist and philosopher, Plutarch is widely regarded as the most significant historian of his era, writing sharp and succinct accounts of the greatest politicians and statesman of the classical period. Taken from The Lives, a series of biographies spanning the Graeco-Roman age, this collection illuminates the twilight of the old Roman Republic from 157-43 BC. Whether describing the would-be dictators Marius and Sulla, the battle between Crassus and Spartacus, the death of political idealist Crato, Julius Caesar's harrowing triumph in Gaul or the eloquent oratory of Cicero, all offer a fascinating insight into an empire wracked by political divisions. Deeply influential on Shakespeare and many other later writers, they continue to fascinate today with their exploration of corruption, decadence and the struggle for ultimate power.

About the Author
Plutarch(c.50-c.120 AD) was a writer and thinker born into a wealthy, established family of Chaeronea in central Greece. He received the best possible education in rhetoric and philosophy, and traveled to Asia Minor and Egypt. Later, a series of visits to Rome and Italy contributed to his fame, which was given official recognition by the emperors Trajan and Hadrian. Plutarch rendered conscientious service to his province and city (where he continued to live), as well as holding a priesthood at nearby Delphi. His voluminous surviving writings are broadly divided into the "moral"works and theParallel Livesof outstanding Greek and Roman leaders. The former (Moralia) are a mixture of rhetorical and antiquarian pieces, together with technical and moral philosophy (sometimes in dialogue form). The Liveshave been influential from the Renaissance onwards.

Dramatic "Lives" of Plutarch
By AntiochAndy
Though he lived in the Roman Empire, Plutarch was a classical Greek scholar. He was born in Chaeronea in central Greece and spent most of his life there. He studied in Athens as a young man and later wrote on a variety of subjects, including natural science, metaphysics and morals. He also served in various civic capacities during his life, received a high government appointment in Greece from Hadrian, and traveled widely.
Plutarch's interest in writing his "Lives" is the character of the individual, the effects of education and status, the drama of successes and failures, and moral lessons that can be drawn from them. His focus on character and the moral lessons to be learned from history is much like Livy, but Plutarch chose to pursue his purpose more directly by writing biographical sketches of his subjects. These sketches were actually written in pairs, matching what Plutarch saw as a Greek and Roman whose lives were comparable. For example, he paired Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar. To most modern readers, this pairing seems rather artificial, and Penguin has chosen to group the "Lives" by historical period.
Plutarch was not an eyewitness to the events he records. The six men covered in this book lived 150 to 200 years before these "Lives" were written. Plutarch is relying on tradition and other historians for his information. Being a Greek writing after 100 A.D. allows him to be more detached, but his work necessarily reflects the biases and excesses of his sources. Was Sulla, for example, as thorough a monster as portrayed?
The "Lives" make wonderful reading. Plutarch had a simple, straightforward style and an superb eye for the dramatic. The six lives included in "The Fall Of The Roman Republic" are especially well-suited to his style. If you have any interest in Roman history, or if you just enjoy fascinating stories, this is not to be missed.

WHY THE REPUBLIC FELL?
By Rodney J. Szasz
I feel a bit strange writting a review about any classic. Its a bit like writing a review of the Koran or the Bible. There is a reason why all these books are classics, and the reason is that they give some glimpse at the immutable nature of mankind.
Plutarch describes a nation wracked by personal divisions during the Roman Civil War with chapters on some of the major participants in this conflict: a true fall from grace for both the people of Rome and the institution of republicanism. There is a lot here that is exciting, such as the war against the Parthians, Jugurthia and the personal rivalries between Ceasar and Pompey.
The writing moves from what I would classify as mildly interesting, usually at the beginning of each chapter as he relates the youth, familiar, and power influences on the personal development of each live, to ripping tales of combat, honour lost and found, and principled peoples meeting usually, bloody fates. Lives of particular note are Pompey and Cicero in this book, but my personal favourite was Crassus, his fight against the slave revolt of Spartacus and his eventual annihilation with his entire army against the Parthians. The other real character that keeps popping up in each chapter is Cato, a political idealist who commited suicide for his repulican ideals when there was every indication that Ceasar respected him and would have spared his life despite Cato's defection to Pompey.
There is lots here that is of course raw speculation: I think that it is unlikely that Ceasar really had dictatorship on his mind since his early youth, but Plutarch would have us believe that it was almost forordained that Ceasar wanted personal control of the State.
Plutarch is much more interesting to read than Ceasar or Livy. So if you are looking for a good place to enter the classics, this is one good read.

Interesting but has Lazy Editing Syndrome
By R. A Forczyk
Plutarch was a Greek historian who wrote in the 2nd Century AD. This work covers the lives of six key individuals in the twilight of the old Roman Republic from 105-43 BC. Marius and Sulla were soldier-dictators who first sought to gain one-man rule. They were followed by Crassus, Pompey and Caesar. These three lives are the best in the book. The final life is Cicero, the lawyer. There is good military detail on Marius' defeat of the Cimbri, Crassus' defeat at Carrhae and Caesar's triumph at Pharsalus. The Mithraditic Wars in Asia minor are important but difficult to follow due to the lack of any maps. There are no great lessons here, other than the eternal struggle for power. The editor was lazy in this book and should have provided a glossary of key individuals, since there are too many individuals with similar names. There are also no maps - a major flaw.

Advanced Signal Processing Handbook: Theory and Implementation for Radar, Sonar, and Medical Imaging Real Time Systems (Electrical Engineer

Advances in digital signal processing algorithms and computer technology have combined to produce real-time systems with capabilities far beyond those of just few years ago. Nonlinear, adaptive methods for signal processing have emerged to provide better array gain performance, however, they lack the robustness of conventional algorithms. The challenge remains to develop a concept that exploits the advantages of both-a scheme that integrates these methods in practical, real-time systems.

The Advanced Signal Processing Handbook helps you meet that challenge. Beyond offering an outstanding introduction to the principles and applications of advanced signal processing, it develops a generic processing structure that takes advantage of the similarities that exist among radar, sonar, and medical imaging systems and integrates conventional and nonlinear processing schemes.

More than six hundred women most likely many more passed as men to fight in the American Civil War, and that's not counting the nurses and spies. In WWI women served as nurses and ambulance drivers, and in Russia Maria Boskareva's Women's Battalion of Death was not the only group of female fighters. By WWII women were ferrying fighter planes in the US and the UK, and in Russia the ''Night Witches'' flew bombers. For the nurses and WACs in the Korean and Vietnam Wars the front lines were everywhere, and the ''long-haired army'' on the Viet Cong side fought at least as fiercely as any men.

Review
"Covering the years from 1862 to 1969, these selections take the usual tension and adrenaline rush of life-and-death situations and use them to fuel passionate, explicit encounters....Uniformly enjoyable, with the right mixture of spice and character-driven plot, this collection pleases on all accounts." - Publishers Weekly

War, Women and Rememberance
By Max Lemberger
I have the attention span of a fly so I regularly read anthologies as it is a great way sample authors without committing to a mind numbing 75,000 word novel. This ten story collection is unusual, and dare I say "important" in that it features lesbian relationships that are forged in the heat of battle. As so elegantly stated in the introduction by the Editor, Sacchi Green, "Women have been largely ignored by the predominately male (war) historians." True. The subtitle is a very accurate descriptor of the content- Lesbian Military Historical Erotica- an unlikely grouping of words even in this modern age- nearly a quadruple oxymoron. They stories are fiction but the settings are real and portray perfectly believable lesbian encounters.

The collection spans over a hundred years of conflict from the Civil War to Vietnam. Again as Ms. Green excellently summarizes, "Women come together for comfort, for relief, driven by adrenaline and hormones, hurling their pleasure into the teeth of mortality and cultural oppression."

I'm hesitant in ranking the stories as that was the editor's task. Anthologies typically draw hundreds of submissions, so these are clearly the best of a large pool. Still there are a couple of works of note. "War of the Rebellion" by Pascal Scott is based in the Civil War. The setting is 1862 when speech and manners were far different from today. Scott retains just enough rustic language to keep the reader in the period. "Watching" by C.B. Potts, set in the Korean War was rife with action, emotion and strong sexual tension. Finally, "Danger" by Sacchi Green, with my generation's war, Vietnam, and its sad aftermath. Green gives readers an unflinching look at nurse struggling with PTSD.

You don't have to be a military buff to enjoy this scintillating collection.

Excellent
By TD Webb
Wow, I'm a history nut and also a veteran, I appreciate the stories about women pretending to be men to fight in the earlier wars especially the civil war. Being born and raised in Canada we were taught US history which I loved and still read today.he stories in here were informative, every one of the author did an excellent job. I wouldn't mind reading more of these.the one that jumped out the most was danger it hit home on exactly what war is like here today gone tomorrow, you only live f o r today.

The story I loved most was Danger from Sacchi Green
By Amazon Customer
I'm not a big fan of history stories but this books suprised me. The stories are well written and gave me a little insight, to what it might have been in these wars. The struggles, the fears and the need of some sort of comfort and relief are understandable. The stories are well developed and have a wide span of war history, from the early World War I till the Vietnam War. Trough the eyes of the authors, I could imagen the feelings of these strong women. The story I loved most was Danger from Sacchi Green.
