Easy to read and perfect for beginners

To be fair, I have the first edition of this book, dated 1987, and called "Turbo C Programming for the IBM". It has been with me many a year and has always been my favorite C book. It is the easiest of my C books to understand, and can be read like a novel with only occasionally going to the computer to try out their programs for reinforcement of a concept. All their examples are complete programs which are very helpful to me. Drawbacks to this book include: a) their sections on "Turbo" C are not applicable anymore, b) there are sections dealing with pc-specific issues that are not useful, and c) the C is not ansi compliant. However, in spite of this, it is still my favorite book because it is easy to understand.

I learned C from this book 11 years ago. (I was 15)

This was my very first C programming book. I had used Pascal a little bit when I bought it. 11 years later my copy of the book is tattered and torn, but I always keep it handy. The book is illustrated very well. It has floating arrows that describe what each element of the source code does. It does not talk down to the audience. The information within is presented with extreme clarity. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn C. I would also recommend this book to anyone wanting to give it as a gift to a teenager.

One of my all-time favorite books

I picked this book up probably around 11 years ago and it is what I used to learn C programming. I had other books at hand as well, but this one really shines. The book has an obvious DOS slant to it as it is from that pre-Windows era. But in learning C programming, this one is hard to beat. I have since gone on to learn other languages, most notably Pascal / Delphi, but this book will always remain on my shelf. It was incredibly useful.

About the Author
Matthew Morris has worked with the Oracle database since 1996 when he worked in the RDBMS support team for Oracle Support Services. Employed by Oracle for over eleven years in support and development positions, Matthew was an early adopter of the Oracle Certified Professional program. Outside of Oracle, he has CompTIA certifications in Linux+ and Security+. Matthew is an experienced Database Administrator and PL/SQL developer and has been creating Web applications with Oracle Application Express since the early days of its release. He is currently employed as a Database Engineer with Computer Sciences Corporation developing enterprise applications.

This book has all the contents of Oracle APEX but doesn't go much deep in explaining. As stated by author, this book is mostly for the users with prior knowledge of APEX.
It has some good details, but I feel the overall content is inadequate. It doesn't specify what kind of approach is needed to prepare for exam.

Good writing, technical problems

Very high quality writing (what I've read so far), but the Kindle version is marred by a missing link to the table of contents. You have to go to the cover, then page forward. I bought this originally for the Jack McDevitt story, and then couldn't remember why I bought it because the "first" page is the beginning of the first story. This is my first attempt at reading a magazine format on the Kindle. Another important feature that's missing is that there's no indication of length. When I read SF magazines I like to pick the stories based on the time I have to read. I realize that page numbers would be useless -- maybe a word or sentence count?

This collection of fantasy and science fiction short stories has a mix of both original and reprints that vary in quality. “Dry Bite” by Will McIntosh is an interesting take on zombie stories, one that focuses on the survivor’s interactions with their deceased loved ones, and was such a good read. D. Thomas Minton’s “The Schr�dinger War” hides the main character’s pain inside an endless loop of war, and really underlines the horror of both.

“Ragged Claws’ by Lisa Tuttle was just okay, with the full impact of the story hinging on the reveal at the end. The protagonist goes to a club and targets a group of young people, and focuses on their conversation about the mythical Colony some have migrated to. “Angelus” by Nina Allan was a much more solid story, although I found some of the details of the world confusing. Two men, once friends, meet in very different circumstances and discuss the woman that changed both their lives. Gene Wolfe’s "Suzanne Delage" totally confused me. The narrator recounts a woman he knew all his life but didn’t know until he saw her daughter, all the while meditating on the meaning of life.

“Homecoming” by Seanan Mcguire was the real standout of the bunch. I don’t want to ruin it for you, but I don’t like sports, and I LOVED this story. It’s the most original reworkings of a popular myth I’ve read in a while.

I love "Lightspeed" -- This one, not so much

Let me be the first to say that I just love "Lightspeed" magazine. I have purchased every single one, and enjoyed them all with very few exceptions.

This particular issue, well, I would say that if it's your first time reading "Lightspeed," pick another one -- any other one. They're all great. But this issue I found a little too relentlessly grim. I know I can't expect to love each and every issue ever; hell, maybe that's the only kind of stories people are writing just now. This magazine is always a terrific value for the money, and I will continue to buy every issue. Just don't get your first overall impression of the magazine from this issue.

Incidentally, I want to mention also that "Lightspeed" has consistently awesome covers. Looking forward to next month.

A multifaceted consideration of the art created for princes, prelates, confraternities, and civic authorities - works displayed in public squares, private palaces, churches, and town halls - Northern Court Cities of Italy provides a rich supplement to traditional accounts of the artistic heritage of the Italian Renaissance, which have traditionally focused on the Florentine, Venetian, and Roman traditions. It was inspired by the true story of Susanna Willard Johnson (1730 – 1810) who, along with her family and younger sister, were kidnapped in an Abenakis Indian raid on Charlestown, New Hampshire in August 1754. The main events in Calico Captive, which occurred on the brink of the French and Indian War, were taken from Johnson's narrative diary A Narrative of the Captivity of Mrs. Johnson, which was first published in 1796. Calico Captive is told through the eyes of Miriam, Johnson's younger sister, and her imagined adventures.
