Sandra L. Richter (Ph.D., Harvard University) is professor of Old Testament, Wheaton College. She is a graduate of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and Harvard University's Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations department. Her publications include The Deuteronomistic History and the Name Theology (Walter de Gruyter) and articles in Eerdmans' Handbook to the Bible (Eerdmans) and Dictionary of the Old Testament: Historical Books (InterVarsity Press).

Ah Ha Moments!

Sandra L. Richter is an amazing professor! She educates you in a down to earth way. You feel very enlightened and want to study with her more. She explains in detail and simplifies complex situations in the Holy Bible to the level an average person can realize how these people feel and live. There are many "Ah Ha moments." Your eyes will be opened and you will truly see how great God is, I felt as though I had looked through a window into our history and saw everything in living action.I recommend this book very highly.

One Book Explains It

I have been studying the Bible for over sixty years. And I would say that if you can read only one book that explains the Old Testament and how it delves into the New Testament, this is that book. Sandra L. Richter presents an approach that I had never before encountered. Yet it is quite understandable to a layperson. Charts and diagrams are included. I also saw the accompanying DVD. Hearing the author and seeing her personality added an enjoyable dimension to her teaching.

My book club read this book. It's almost like taking a college course. A lot of excellent information arranged in a way that helps you remember it although I will probably read it again. There was information that was new to us so it was very thought-provoking. Good for a book club because it invokes lively discussion.

Yuli V. Nazarov is a Professor in the Quantum Nanoscience department, the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience, Delft University of Technology. He has worked in quantum transport since the emergence of the field in the late eighties.

Jeroen Danon is a Researcher at the Dahlem Center for Complex Quantum System, Free University Berlin. He works in the fields of quantum transport and mesoscopic physics.

This is a book can make you smart in Field Theory

This is a book can make you smart in Field theory. But it is still good to put it together with "Lectures on Quantum Field Theory"(by Ashok Das). It just reminds me another equally good book "Ultracold Quantum Fields" (Henk T. C. Stoof, Dennis B. M. Dickerscheid, Koos Gubbels).

Harmonic Oscillators are stressed all over the book. It just remind people the importance of Cartan-Weyl representation theory should be acknowledged.

Several Things need to be figured out by a serious physics student:

a) What is perturbation in QM and QFT? How does it relate with representation theories (including SU(2), Cartan-Weyl representation)? Pauli Matrix (Spin 1/2 perturbation case) could naturally be related to SU(2), and spin 1/2 could be the foundation of higher spin perturbation construction (Cartan-Weyl Subgroup). Is there any relation with approximation theory or image processing or digital signal processing? Could wavelet be used in Perturbative Field Theory?

b) What is quantization? What could be obtained classically (without incorporating canonical/path integral quantization rules)? To analyze the "equipotential-line in Phase Space" , before and after the quantization, the insight could be gained from simple examples in Quantum Mechanics. In Heisenberg Equation, unitary operator (which guarantee the conservation of probability -> Liouville Equation in Phase Space, Perfect/Ideal Fluid Model) links the initial state and final state (OR input state and output state in Field Theory). Green's Function could be adopted to mediate the input state and output state, revealing the interaction processes, which has been visualized as Feynmann Diagrams. That higher rank Green's Function could be decoupled into two-point Green's Function, which not merely a technique simplifying the calculation, could correspond to the physical fact that multiple-input, multiple-output interactions could be decoupled to simple interactions like pair creation and annihilation. Further, in the tangent space, the eigenbasis of Hermitian Operator (which could be exponentialized to be unitary operator) decomposes the field quantity and relates it with ladder operators (Cartan-Weyl representation of Lie Group).

c) Two kinds of representation theory. One corresponds to classification of particles and could lead to spin-statistic relation, which further leads to commutators and anti-commutators. Then through complexification and (de-)composition, it could lead to SU(2) Cartan-Weyl representation.

d) SUSY and Conformal Field Theory. ladder operators are hither and thither. But who is whose ladder operator? Is there any mixture?

Largely useless and immensely frustrating

I found this book immensely frustrating. I bought it last March along with a couple other books on PyGame (that's about all there are) so I could learn how to use the PyGame library. My first disappointment was how thin this volume is: it has a grand total of 52 pages of actual content. I also found the book to be nearly inscrutable for someone who doesn't know PyGame. I was appalled that I had spent $18 for a little booklet and disappointed that I couldn't learn from the book, but the description on Amazon promised so much from the book that I set it aside to look at later and turned to the other books.

Recently I came back to this book. I have now read several books on PyGame and am able to write simple games in it, so I thought it might be a good time to tackle the booklet. From my new perspective, I can now see that the problem wasn't me -- this book is awful. I don't say such things lightly: I read every page and did my best to learn from it. But it wasn't easy, and it wasn't very useful. Here is a quick summary of the problems I encountered.

[] The book is not written for the stated audience. The description says that a knowledge of Python is assumed but no prior experience with game development is assumed. I can't imagine anyone who doesn't already know PyGame getting much from the book.Also, the book is aimed specifically at Linux developers. The first chapter pays lip service to Windows and Mac environments, but all the examples use Linux command lines with arguments to install and run the various packages that the book mentions. Trying to follow these examples in a Windows environment was an exercise in frustration I soon abandoned.

[] The book doesn't cover the stated topic. The title claims it's a how-to book for Python game development. It does, in fact, briefly describe a few of PyGame's many capabilities, but these descriptions are limited to a handful of 3-4 page sections that give you a sense of what PyGame code looks like but not much more. In reality, the book is a motley collection of ways to use PyGame in conjunction with other software. Right off the bat, the author brings in NumPy -- a totally separate library that has its own learning curve -- and uses it throughout the examples. He also brings in Matplotlib, scikit-learn, cprofile, puDB, Twisted, and PGS4A. I won't bore you with what all these packages do; they are all high-quality, useful tools for Python developers. But they are covered in 4-7 page sections (there are no chapters as such), so we don't actually learn much about any of them. Mostly it's just a quick tour of tools that an experienced PyGame developer might want to consider using.

[] The examples are really lame. Most of them involve moving a single image around the screen. That image is the profile of a man with the top of his head chopped off. I do not kid you. There is a second image in one of the examples: a blob that looks vaguely like a hammer that you are supposed to use to pound on the already decorticate head. Very strange, and not at all useful.

[] The code is very hard to read. The main problem is that line wraps aren't treated as they would be in actual code, so long lines simply run onto the next line, out-dented to the left margin. Proper indentation is absolutely essential in Python, which has no end-of-line markers. This is just plain sloppy work.

[] Many of the explanations are either uninformative or confusing. The explanation of the get_rect() method is that it "gets a rectangle," get_surface() "gets a surface," and so on. No mention of how and why these methods are used, or even the arguments they require.

There's more, but you get the idea. If you are an experienced PyGame developer working on Linux who wants a quick idea of how you might bring in other packages to expand the scope of your games, this book could be useful to you. Anyone else is likely to find it as frustrating as I did.

Throughout the book you will be introduced to some of the most useful Python libraries like the NumPy numerical library and the Pygame Subset For Android.
Beginners can choose to begin with simple concepts such as drawing, animating objects, and using fonts; then move on to more advanced topics like artificial intelligence, collision detection, and the use of OpenGL. There are even sections with advice on debugging and profiling your code. More expert users can jump into any topic they desire. Each section provides quick, concise examples on the topic. Although not completely necessary, some Python experience may be helpful for the complete beginner.
Overall, very fun to work through, and a great resource for expanding on your own capabilities.

You'll either love it or hate it, either way read it.

Everyone should read this book. Because identity, power, and the present are so wrapped up in how we interpret the past, the book is essential for understanding how there are multiple valid interpretations of history that can exist and be interwoven. Warning: some knowledge of Stonehenge is required to comprehend certain parts of the book.

Literally the worst book I have ever read....

My God, where to start.....

This is the kind of fuzzy headed touchy-feely stuff that you were warned about by anyone with even a bare conception of scientific knowledge is about. Bender "is" an archaeologist, but quite frankly you wouldn't notice as she spends most of her time talking about dirty Caucasian hippies and how "abused" they are by the British state. Multivocality should of course be a part of any good archaeological study, the voices of women, children, and other overlooked persons in the past is necessary to present a complete view of it, but Bender takes multivocality so far as to equate the aforementioned hippies with abused and downtrodden people in the third world, something that even Ian Hodder(the king of fuzzy logic and sloppy conjecture)takes her to task for during one of the Dialogue "chapters".

That brings us to the structure of the book itself (or lack thereof). Bender obviously considers herself a brilliant post-modernist by doing away with such things as linear narrative, authoritative voice, and traditional writing. in the end, it comes off as lazy and ill-conceived. Four of the eight chapters consist solely of apparently recoded/email conversations with academics and activists lacking in both context and usefulness. One chapter engages the use of cartoons to illuminate her own personal and the book's theoretical background (a good idea in theory, academics should be self reflexive)but the execution is so slapdash that it imparts knowledge no better than the densest and most inaccessible theory chapter written by the type of academic she claims to be reacting against.

This is a college text-book, there is no doubt about it (hell, look at the price). However, if the author of such a book essentially reduces their experience and expertise down to the thesis that "everyone's ideas matter" it is quite useless for students seeking to broaden their understanding in pursuit of a degree. As students we are paying to be tutored by those who know more than us about a particular subject so that we can go out into the world of work with at least a starting point of knowledge from which to generate our own expertise, refusing to take on the role of an experienced professional makes any academic author or professor lazy at best and a thief at worst.

It is an excellent study guide to help students prepared for the board exam. The reading general knowledge section is excellent as well as all the other math, classroom mgt, essay forms, language mechanics sections. The Statically-Typed FP Book Everyone Else Wishes They'd Written

Full disclosure: Paul and Rúnar are both friends and colleagues.

I use Scala professionally, but recreationally I program in OCaml. I've studied OCaml and Haskell in some depth, and dabbled in even stranger languages like Concurrent Clean and Mercury. So I'm reasonably familiar with the functional programming literature. This is by way of background for the extravagant claim I'm going to make: "Functional Programming in Scala" is the best book on functional programming yet written, regardless of language.

Why do I think that is? Ironically, I think it has to do with essentially two things: that Scala is not a purely functional language like Haskell, Clean, or Mercury, and that Scala is a relatively deficient functional programming language. These issues combine to necessitate more motivation than, e.g. a Haskell book requires (the reader will be doing referentially-transparent programming whether they see the need for it, like it, or not) and greater clarity of exposition (it's easy for FP in Scala to become pretty ugly pretty quickly if you don't approach it with discernment and taste). Thankfully, Paul and Rúnar have the discernment, experience, and taste that this endeavor calls for.

Also perhaps because Scala has seen relatively widespread adoption, the book cannot, and does not, fall into the trap of only discussing the low-hanging fruit of statically-typed functional programming. There are no compilers or theorem provers in this book, cool as whipping one of those out over the weekend undeniably is. This book is about surprisingly mundane stuff... that's proven, over decades, ridiculously easy to get wrong, whether you have one year's experience, ten years' experience, or one year's experience ten times. It turns out all those crazy statically-typed FP claims about greater correctness, ease of reasoning, maintainability, and surprisingly in many cases even performance are true. Part of the genius of this book is that it explains WHY they're true, in detail, with tons of examples, without beating you over the head with it. It breaks statically-typed FP out of the domain of "the smartest guys in the room" and shows why we should all care--and that we all can. I can think of no higher recommendation than that.

Fantastic, but you have to do the work.

This book teaches Scala and FP by leading you through exercises were you are expected to work out critical features of the Scala library for yourself. As an example, regular expressions isn't in the index, but that doesn't mean they aren't covered. You make your own regex parser in Exercise 9.6.

if you are like me--a programmer of middling talent and no FP experience--the notion of working out the fundamentals of FP for yourself is pretty overwhelming. But the authors have provided superb, well commented solutions for all the exercises to nudge you up the learning curve. Perhaps half the book isn't even in the book but in the solutions.

There aren't illustrations or examples of how to use FP to solve real problems in this book, so I recommend reading "Advanced Analytics with Spark" at the same time. They are both outstanding, but FPIS explains Scala without using it, where AAS uses Scala without (overly) explaining it.

A gem of a book

Although I'm only through Chapter 3, I can say that this book is exceptional. I've religiously done all of the, so far, 34 exercises as I've been reading along and I find them to be brilliantly graduated, highly instructional, and fun. The authors have crafted a beautiful, mercifully small, book that takes the reader from zero (no knowledge of Scala) to a well informed Scala Functional Programming coder in concise, well written, logical steps.

If you are sold on FP and want to stay in the FP world while writing Scala then this is the book for you. On the other hand, if you are an OO person in general, or an OO Scala person in particular, then this book will challenge you to look at programming differently and you will come away a better programmer (and maybe an FP one!).

Having come from a flirtation with Haskell and OCaml, but finding myself in need of writing for the JVM, this is exactly the book I needed.
