Born in 1937 in Algeria, former Chair of the Centre deRecherches en tudes Fminines at Paris VIII University, Cixous lectures in France and abroad. Her writing is remarkable for its crossing of boundaries between the genres and styles of fiction, autobiography, and analysis.

Nobel Peace Prize Winner in Economics Professor Fogel came to the amazing conclusion that on the whole

In the course of discovery in old US Government documents, Nobel Peace Prize Winner in Economics Professor Fogel came to the amazing conclusion that on the whole, Southern Slaves fared better overall physically in diet and housing than many of the so called, "Free Working Class People" in the Industrialized Northern States. Slaves were treated much better than we are taught today because in a slave economy their worth is a substantial monetary investment. The facts in the archived US Government documents; production records, bills of lading for food, etc. are irrefutable. In my opinion, the author's conclusions run contrary to the politicaly correct speech of today making for a challenging and thought provoking book.
The Southern States use of slave labor made them a, "economic juggernaut" poised to overtake the Industrialized Northern States economically prior to the Civil War. Of course, we can not put any price on a person's freedom and the author does not suggest otherwise.

Amazing analysis, overall impact needs wider thought

Amazing analysis. Hard to figure out how to take it - of course slavery was terrible, but the economic implication is that it wasn't so bad (economically), especially compared with the time since Emancipation. Then try to weigh the economic impact vs the social, family, educational impact, and it puts the economic impact at the bottom of the list, convincing me that we still have a Very Long way to go to repair all the damage to millions of families.

About the Author
Hal Blumenfeld is Professor in the Departments of Neurology, Neurobiology, and Neurosurgery at Yale University School of Medicine. He has taught neuroanatomy at Harvard, Yale, and Columbia Universities using the approach of Neuroanatomy through Clinical Cases, which the students greeted with highly favorable feedback. He recently received the prestigious Francis Gilman Blake Award, as the most outstanding teacher of medical sciences at the Yale School of Medicine, and the Dreifuss-Penry Epilepsy Research Award from the American Academy of Neurology. He has also been awarded several major grants (from the National Institutes of Health, and private foundations) to pursue his research, which focuses on epilepsy as a model system for investigating consciousness. Current projects include neuroimaging, neurophysiology, and behavioral experiments in animal models of epilepsy, and direct application to human patients. His clinical training included an internship in Internal Medicine at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, a residency in Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital, and a fellowship in Epilepsy at Yale University School of Medicine. He studied Bioelectrical Engineering at Harvard University, then earned a Ph.D. (in Physiology and Cellular Biophysics) as well as his M.D. at Columbia University.

Buy It. Just Do It.

I am a second year medical student in California. I have recently boarded the struggle bus that is neuroanatomy. I have never taken neuroanatomy prior to medical school, and to say its overwhelming is an understatement. Another note - I own the Haines Atlas(9th E), this text, FA, and Firecracker. Professional students have a limited budget and need to find the most high yield resources. This is the one.

I never usually buy textbooks because they suck. This is the anti-textbook. It actually is designed to be read, in order, and it is engaging, relevant, and interesting. The pictures are bomb. It constantly checks your understanding, references other section of the text (THAT MAKE SENSE AND ARE RELEVANT), and everything is clinically relevant. Finally, a book written by a clinician for clinicians, not researchers or academics. Purchase it. Read it. See how it effortlessly owns all other texts and actually pushes you to GET neuroanatomy to HELP PATIENTS, not uselessly memorize that the trigeminal system has 4 nuclei, or that there are 5 descending motor tracts, or remember some research extraneous bullcrap that fills the volume of much of our medical textbooks.

Dr. Blumenfeld, if you are listening, can you make a trip to California to school your colleagues about how to write clinically oriented organ systems based texts and teaching materials?

absolutely necessary

I bought this book at the beginning of the term and didn't open it until I got desperate halfway through.

Other than the drugs, cancer, and histology&pathology sections of the course, this book had everything. It is laid out better, it is integrated from clinical presentation, to exam, imaging, diagnosis and discussion.

I read the book from cover to cover, and went from failing miserably to passing with better than class average. If you read the book as it is laid out, you will build on the concepts and it will introduce key points at relevant times. By the end, you will be able to think through the anatomy instead of trying to just remember a bunch of factoids.

The imaging in the book is amazing and well explained, and the cases are real. The language is very descriptive, and the illustrations and figures are great. The cranial nerves and blood supply chapters are highlights.

It shouldn't be your ONLY Neuro book, but you will use it every day even after reading it.

If I ever see Dr. Blumenfeld, I'm going to hug his leg like a little child.

Very useful

Book is very well written, easy to follow, very clinically oriented as the title suggests. It does not have the details of a full neuroscience textbook the way the Purves or Kandel books do. As a medical student you need the more detailed neuroscience part also. Still, this is the 'go to' book for clinical explanations in neurology/neuroanatomy. What I don't like about this book has to do with the publisher, not the book: After paying over a hundred Dollars for the book you only get two years of online access, after that they want you to pay an extra $30 for additional two year access, seems like a rip off.

To answer this question, anthropologist Summerson Carr traces the charged interactions between counselors, clients, and case managers at "Fresh Beginnings," an addiction treatment program for homeless women in the midwestern United States. She shows that shelter, food, and even the custody of children hang in the balance of everyday therapeutic exchanges, such as clinical assessments, individual therapy sessions, and self-help meetings. Acutely aware of the high stakes of self-representation, experienced clients analyze and learn to effectively perform prescribed ways of speaking, a mimetic practice they call "flipping the script."

As a clinical ethnography, Scripting Addiction examines how decades of clinical theorizing about addiction, language, self-knowledge, and sobriety is manifested in interactions between counselors and clients. A Crucial and Careful Study

This is a patient, exhaustive and exacting ethnographic study. It forces one to think at once about social welfare policies, ideas of drug treatment, the limits and potentials of language and, maybe most of all, about the daily struggles of so many U.S. institutions charged with undoing addiction and dependency. The book's own careful act of undoing is in its thorough deconstruction of the assumed divide between therapist and client in such institutions. Instead of the addict-in-denial and the therapist determining "Truth," this book shows clients acutely aware of the roles they are expected to play and the language they are expected to use - to keep their kids, to stay in the program, to have a roof over their heads - while we see, in sometimes excruciating detail, the lengths therapists are forced to go to maintain their program's funding and bolster their own "authority." Everyone interested in poverty and policy, therapeutic regimens, political agency and semiotics and institutions should read and consider this ethnography.

Insightful and True

This was a compelling read. Compassionate as well, smartly written, indeed illuminating on this subject that begs such exploration. Carr's book not only turns an anthropological eye on drug treatment, it treats the overlap of language and drug addicts and politics with the respect required to be properly understood. This is thorough work, while at the same time most engaging. Highly recommended, intriguing and an absolutely necessary read for anyone looking to explore this most topical of subject matters. This book hits all the marks.

First Impressions

Ms. Carr has certainly done her research well, is very familiar with addiction treatment. How language is used in the subject of study she generalizes to other addiction treatment settings. She says at the heart of the treatment approach is a ritualized language the counselors use to indoctrinate the clients in treatment. If the clients "flip the script" they can sound like they're getting it. In other words, they can fake it, like one client, Nikki, does in the book. Yes, the author is absolutely right, that's talking the talk. Experienced addiction counselors know that clients who are truly in a process of change become willing to do the hard work recovery requires. She raises the interesting question of whether treatment produces real change or not.

Best book available on the topic!!

I've read several other books, and countless online tutorials and forum posts on this topic, and this book has all of that info and more. A well organized and useful book that includes detailed color photos of each step of a variety of methods and all of the steps to take in your growing efforts. It covers from total beginner to more advanced bulk methods, each thoroughly explained and photographed. All on high quality paper. An excellent book at a very fair price. If you want to explore and experiment, or if you're just curious, this is THE book to start with. And no, I don't know the author, and I'm only writing this review because I bought the book, was surprised at the quality of the content, and found it very helpful. As for the legality issue and the prudish US laws, you'll have to decide for yourself where you stand and how you feel about that.

Excellent study resource. These books are time sensitive, get the right edition.

As a license examiner, I am often asked to recommend study material and this is the one that I recommend. It takes a balanced approach to teaching the basic material and test preparation. Some of the other books that I see concentrate more on passing the test by learning the test questions than actually teaching the material.

I am often approached by people interested in getting a license but who really don't know why. Ham radio is a broad hobby with many different areas of interest. I think that this book also does a good job of introducing that to somebody who is new to the hobby.

Make sure that you get the right edition of any study manual. The tests are updated every four years. This edition (3d) is designed for use July 2014-June 2018.

Master the concepts, pass the test easily, and get on the air

First-rate book. It briefly explains the hobby opportunities before getting into the training. After the training material, there is an excellent glossary, the complete exam question pool (with correct answers indicated), as well as a supplementary chapter on choosing a ham radio.

FWIW, I used this book for self-training and got 100% correct on the exam November 8, 2014. No previous amateur radio experience and never took a ham class.

The training material is geared toward the beginner without being condescending. All topics are explained simply and completely. Excellent graphics -- lots of tables, charts, photographs, and line drawings. For that reason, I'd recommend buying the paperback instead of the Kindle version. As much as I love my e-Ink Kindle, this is the sort of book that is better in paper and in a large format. If you want the Kindle version, use a Kindle app on a large computer screen, not a phone or small tablet.

There are only 35 questions on the Technician test and Morse code is not required. Anyone who mastered the material in this book could pass the test without any difficulty. There is minimal math in the test and this book will teach you all you need.

After each piece of training, the text refers the reader to the relevant questions in the question pool at the back of the book. It encourages you to master each little "bite-sized" piece before moving on, which helps to build your confidence in your ability to master the material. In addition there is a a link to book-specific online supplementary material on the arrl.org website.

One advantage of this book over the competing books is that it teaches the concepts rather than just how to pass the test. I found that valuable when taking the test. I did not need to worry about memorizing arcane material because I actually understood the concepts. That really helped to eliminate any test anxiety.

Finally, the book teaches how hams operate on the air. Once you pass the test, you will feel much more comfortable getting on the air with your new Technician "ticket."

Includes the new Technician questions

The Technician exam has a new pool of questions as of July 1, 2014. ARRL's third edition of the Ham Radio License Manual is designed for the aspiring ham radio operator. The material is very clear and readable, even the math sections. Even though you could simply memorize the questions from the FCC test bank, you'll be missing out on a great amount of information that's useful to the new ham operator.

Amazon's pricing is better than the ARRL website and with Prime shipping, you can't beat it.

The book is excellent. Highly recommended.
