Don't Buy this edition but the 3rd edition
By Cowboy
Why pay $122 for this edition when it has no new information in it and the 3rd edition costs $9.27 used. This book is used for my 2 course class. The first course I took required the 3rd edition and I am going to take the second course that requires the 4th edition. When I looked at the 4th edition, I was shocked that someone would write a new edition that didn't contain any new information. Now, I'm not saying this is not a great book. I loved this book. This edition should never have been written. Don't take my word for it. Here is what the book itself says. In Preface titled "Changes in This Edition" it says "Improved Qrganization in Chapter 3". That means he moved some things around, no new information in Chapter 3. "New In the Spotlight Sections" This is new, it is additional problems with detailed analysis. This is nice for reinforcing what's taught, but it doesn't teach anything new. "Video Notes" These are viodes on the website to accompany the text. This is nice to reforce the text learning, but no new information there. You can get the early edition and go to the website and view the videos without buying this edition. "Additional Programming Problems" This is nice but it had suficiant problems to start with. NO NEW INFO. If this text is required by your class, ask the teacher if you can use the previous edition. That is what I'm doing.

Great Examples and Review Questions
By J. DeCamp
Starting Out With Java 4th edition is a great book and really took a total beginner in Java to proficiency. Everything that is covererd in the book is explained very clearly and there are a ton of code examples. The questions at the end of each chapter are challenging by just the right amount so they all make sense, but none are too easy.

If you want to learn Java and have no prior experience programming I'd recommend this book.

New York Times Bestseller (Expeditions)

“Thrilling.… A captivating history of two men who dramatically changed their contemporaries’ view of the past.” —Kirkus (starred review)

"[An] adventure tale that make[s] Indiana Jones seem tame.” —Library Journal

In 1839, rumors ofextraordinary yet baffling stone ruins buried within the unmapped jungles of Central America reached two of the world’s most intrepid travelers. Seized by the reports, American diplomat John Lloyd Stephens and British artist Frederick Catherwood—both already celebrated for their adventures in Egypt, the Holy Land, Greece, and Rome—sailed together out of New York Harbor on an expedition into the forbidding rainforests of present-day Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico. What they found wouldupend the West’s understanding of human history.

In the tradition of Lost City of Z and In the Kingdom of Ice, former San Francisco Chronicle journalist and Pulitzer Prize finalist William Carlsen reveals theremarkable story of the discovery of the ancient Maya. Enduring disease, war, and the torments of nature and terrain, Stephens and Catherwood meticulously uncovered and documented the remains of an astonishing civilization that had flourished in the Americas at the same time as classic Greece and Rome—and had been its rival in art, architecture, and power. Theirmasterful book about the experience, written by Stephens and illustrated by Catherwood, became a sensation, hailed by Edgar Allan Poe as “perhaps the most interesting book of travel ever published” and recognized today as the birth of American archaeology. Most important, Stephens and Catherwood were the first to grasp the significance of the Maya remains, understanding that their antiquity and sophistication overturned the West’s assumptions about the development of civilization.

By the time of the flowering of classical Greece (400 b.c.), the Maya were already constructing pyramids and temples around central plazas. Within a few hundred years the structures took on a monumental scale that required millions of man-hours of labor, and technical and organizational expertise. Over the next millennium, dozens of city-states evolved, each governed by powerful lords, some with populations larger than any city in Europe at the time, and connected by road-like causeways of crushed stone. The Maya developed a cohesive, unified cosmology, an array of common gods, a creation story, and a shared artistic and architectural vision. They created stucco and stone monuments and bas reliefs, sculpting figures and hieroglyphs with refined artistic skill. At their peak, an estimated ten million people occupied the Maya’s heartland on the Yucatan Peninsula, a region where only half a million now live. And yet by the time the Spanish reached the “New World,” the Maya had all but disappeared; they would remain a mystery for the next three hundred years.

Today, the tables are turned: the Maya are justly famous, if sometimes misunderstood, while Stephens and Catherwood have been nearly forgotten. Based on Carlsen’s rigorousresearch and his own 2,500-mile journey throughout the Yucatan and Central America, Jungle of Stone is equally a thrilling adventure narrative and a revelatory work of history that corrects our understanding of Stephens, Catherwood, and the Maya themselves.

Brilliant Narrative of the Discovery of Mayan Ruins
By Brent Siegel
A brilliantly written page turner about the discovery of the major Mayan ruins in the first half of the nineteenth century. Mr.Carlsen's writing gives the reader a real sense of the challenges faced by these adventurers, one of whom, John Stephens was a great travel writer and the other, Frederick Catherwood, was a brilliant artist. Mr. Carlsen includes many of Catherwood's drawings and offsets some of them with current photographs of the same sites so the reader gets a real sense of the detail that went into these drawings. Anyone with any interest in the history of early civilizations, particularly in the Western Hemisphere should read this book.

This book will be a movie
By steven m. thomas
I am a non non-fiction reader. I like adventure stories with a veneer of history to make the story seem authentic. WOW this had it all...I kept reading to find out what would happen next. It still amazes me how these two ‘gentlemen’ persevered against all the jungle could throw at them…waking up each day with only grit and pluck to say “one more dose of Malaria and Cholera please”.
This was a pivot point in history. Plus it clearly demonstrates the spirit of Americanism to outmaneuver the European Powers to discover and document a rich and untold history of the Western Hemisphere. This book illustrates the entrepreneurial culture of that period to take high risks and throw one’s self into mad ventures. I love how the author retraces the 2,800 mile journey to juxtapose his photos to the original sketches and paintings 170 years earlier.

Fortunately, Carlsen doesn't strain for novelty
By Alec Dubro
So much has been written about the Mayas and their abandoned cities that it's difficult to imagine something wholly new on the subject. Fortunately, Carlsen doesn't strain for novelty. Instead, he revisits the 19th century works of John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood, whose Incidents of Travel began to change Western notions about the Maya and Central American history and prehistory. Given their cultural and technological constraints, Stephens and Catherwood were remarkably prescient about the histories of the overgrown cities of Guatemala and the Yucatn. And they were daring in refuting the Western canard that this artistically dazzling civilization must have come from the Phoenicians, the Lost Tribes of Israel -- anyone other than the indigenous Indians who still lived in the same geography.

Carlsen, an award-winning reporter, has lived often in Central America and knows the country. In Jungle of Stone, he physically and historically retraces the route that these fascinating and intrepid explorers -- Stephens an American and Catherwood British -- took through the often overgrown and insect-ridden jungles, savanna and scrubland. And, Carlsen contrasts the Catherwood's remarkable sketches and engravings with his own contemporary photographs. You are already familiar with Catherwood's art, even if you don't know it.

But Stephens and Catherwood didn't just report on archaeology and anthropology; they also detailed the political and military battles wracking Central America. These were bizarre and bloody, and were clearly just a phase in the 500 year Indian wars begun by Spain and continued by their successors.

Heavily detailed but never tedious, this is best best background reading for your upcoming trip to Maya country. Notn planning one? You will when you finish this.

The Soul of Leadership: Unlocking Your Potential for Greatness, by Deepak Chopra

Leadership is the most crucial choice one can make—it is the decision to step out of darkness into the light.

Bestselling author and spiritual guide Deepak Chopra invites you to become the kind of leader most needed today: a leader with vision who can make that vision real. Chopra has been teaching leadership to CEOs and other top executives for eight years, and the path outlined in The Soul of Leadership applies to any business, but the same principles are relevant in every community and area of life, from family and home to school, place of worship, and neighborhood. “At the deepest level,” Chopra writes, “a leader is the symbolic soul of a group.”

With clear, practical steps, you are led through the crucial skills outlined in the acronym L-E-A-D-E-R-S:
L = Look and Listen
E = Emotional Bonding
A = Awareness
D = Doing
E = Empowerment
R = Responsibility
S = Synchronicity

After identifying your own soul profile and the core values you want to develop, you can use these seven skills to allow your potential for greatness to emerge. Only from the level of the soul, Chopra contends, are great leaders created. Once that connection
is made, you have unlimited access to the most vital qualities a leader can possess: creativity, intelligence, organizing power, and love.

The Soul of Leadership aims to fill the most critical void in contemporary life, the void of enlightened leaders. “You can be such a leader,” Chopra promises. “The path is open to you. The only requirement is that you learn to listen to your inner guide.” In this unique handbook you are shown how to do just that, in words as practical as they are uplifting. The future is unfolding at this very minute, and the choice to lead it lies with each of us, here and now.

And the stories of two leaders who made millions following the deepest inclinations of their souls (which Chopra argues is the only path to true success) make this leadership system appear deceptively simple to employ. Its basis is the idea that true leaders use their power to achieve visionary goals, but a leader must also have integrity. Chopra brings deep meaning to the discussion, rebranding success as something far beyond financial gain, which seems wise in light of recent economic events.

“I greatly enjoyed Deepak's newest book The Soul of Leadership. From the chapter on synchronicity on, I couldn't put it down. It's got so many quality ideas that it must be read a second time. The book inspired me to become a better leader.”
—George Zimmer, Men's Wearhouse

“The Soul of Leadership unfolds as an exceptional guide for remembering how to access the peace and clarity the soul brings to any vision, decision, action, or non-action. Deepak Chopra’s latest book lights the way to 21st century leadership, where consciousness, love and compassion redefine the locus of power in relationships and organizations. A truly aware leader in touch with his or her soul will always be in the flow of the world. Like a tuned-in kayaker in white water, when you are in the middle of it, you continually contribute your own creativity and good intentions to the overall flow, while inspiring and empowering your team to do the same.”

Time to Step Up!
By Lissa Coffey, Host of coffeytalk.com
"The Soul of Leadership" is a guidebook that not only encourages us to step up and take a leadership role in our lives and our communities, it shows us exactly how to do it. Deepak Chopra based this book on a course that he teaches at Kellogg's School of Business at Northwestern University. We may not be so lucky as to be able to take his class at this prestigious school, but we can read the book, and benefit from the wisdom in it. I'd like to see every college student have this book as required reading. The potential for greatness is within each one of us. By accessing it we help ourselves, and the world. Isn't that what we need right now?

Spiritual Leadership in the Real World
By Sampo Kaasila
This book is inspired by a course that Deepak Chopra teaches at Kellogg's School of Business at Northwestern University. It is full of great wisdom and practical advice.

Chopra points out that a great leader has a vision that inspires others, and the ability manifest this vision. Where does this ability to manifest a vision come from? It comes from knowing your spiritual self and from being aligned with and rooted in a place of inner peace, love and joy on the level of the soul. Both emotional and spiritual intelligence are needed. Additionally a leader needs to understand and know how to meet the different levels of needs within the group.

A great leader leads the group towards evolution instead of stagnation, towards an increase in the group's consciousness instead of a decrease, towards expansion instead of constriction, and towards serving the souls purpose instead of the opposite. Chopra also warns against leadership traps such as: obsessing over risk, avoiding problems, not being in tune with the groups needs, not taking responsibility for bad decisions and their consequences, blaming others and making excuses, craving approval and reassurance, not delegating authority - or delegating but still keeping a tight grip on all decisions, looking out more for yourself than the group, only listening to a few select voices, lying or covering up the truth.

The book guides you with Chopra's L-E-A-D-E-R-S formula:
-Look and Listen both inside and outside of you on the level of body, mind heart, and the soul, and ask the right questions.
-Emotionally bond with employees and customers and form real relationships. Employees need to feel they are truly part of the business, so deep motivation, and a sense of purpose and loyalty can form.
-Awareness is important so you can be conscious of who you are and of your impact on others, as well as the role of the business in the world. Intuition allows the leader to go beyond logic and reason, but still use those for justification.
-Do and be action oriented. Allow your vision to come to life.
-Empowerment beyond the ego level ("I", "me", and "mine") motivates and enables both you and employees to contribute.
-Responsibility is the freedom to choose and make changes. Allow employees the freedom to take their own risks. This means allowing both your own and employees' growth and expansion.
-Synchronicity is generated from the level of the soul, and it purposefully paves the way for the change you are looking for. This goes far beyond good luck.

Read this book so you can learn to know yourself and increase your ability to manifest change in an effective way, both inside and in the world. Allow yourself to move towards greatness!

Leadership as it should be
By Gerry Hartigan
As a great fan of Deepak's I was thrilled to read this book. He brings the elements of leadership to the fore as a spiritual as well as practical issue. You cannot separate a leader from what he or she is like on the inside and what their foundation is because out of that flows their decisions and actions.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in leadership as well as to all managers in the business world. There is much here to provoke your thinking.

Keesia and Henri Matisse have the same birthday—New Year’s Eve! That’s why she picks him for her artist report. She finds out that over his long career Matisse made paintings, sculpture, books, costumes, and her favorite—his cut-outs, or what Matisse called “drawing with scissors.” The report is filled with about 20 of Matisse’s masterpieces as well as artwork that Keesia has created in his “style” (cut-out leaves, drawings through windows, fauvist animals). As she follows Matisse through his life she discovers why he is considered one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century.

From Publishers Weekly
The Smart About Art series continues with Henri Matisse: Drawing with Scissors by Jane O'Connor, illus. by Jessie Hartland. Presented and organized in the style of a grade-school report (and written from the perspective of the fictitious "Keesie Johnson"), the latest installment covers the Fauve movement and Matisse's shift from painting to cut-paper collage.

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3-A creative way to instill an appreciation of art in children. The text begins with a "hand-printed" letter on lined paper from the teacher, Ms. Brandt, posing three questions to her students for their reports about a famous artist. The rest of the book is related as Keesia Johnson's report. Hartland's color illustrations are captioned with dialogue or other text; examples of Matisse's art are dispersed throughout; and there are photos of the artist and his mother; of the child who "wrote" the report and her sister; of Matisse in his 70s, making paper cutouts; and of stained-glass windows in a church that he designed. A brief biographical sketch is included, and children are also told about Matisse's changes in style, use of bright colors, and skill in various mediums. The last page contains the teacher's "hand-printed" note to Keesia after reading her work. This book could be used in conjunction with Mike Venezia's Henri Matisse (Children's, 1997), Nelly Munthe's Meet Matisse (Little, Brown, 1983; o.p.), and Ernest Lloyd Raboff's Henri Matisse (Lippincott, 1988; o.p.) to introduce the life and works of this renowned French artist.

An amusing introduction to the artist Matisse that I highly recommend. Written as though it's an 8-yr-old's school report, it is accessible and very informative. It includes reproductions of Matisse art and biographical information. Loved it. And it was useful as a teaching tool.

An excellent introductory book to the New Testament
By Ruben de Rus
There are many introductory books to the New Testament in the market and many more are being published and reedited. That is the case of the book What the New Testament Authors Really Cared About: A Survey of Their Writings (2nd ed).

This book could be catalogued as an introduction to the New Testament because that is the purpose of this book. The book is structured and divided by biblical authors and the books they wrote. Its main focus is to provide readers with a better understanding of what was the main purpose of every New Testament writer to write the book or letter they wrote.

Every chapter opens by answering the questions Who? When? Where? and Why? These are the basic questions that every Bible student should seek to answer in order to be able to understand the basic of every book. Then the authors include carefully crafted verses from the book under study. The authors do not engage in theological, exegetical discussions, or textual issues. Instead they provide an overview of the context of each book and the author’s main purpose.

The book includes an introductory chapter entitled “Walking in the Sands of a First-Century Jew.” This chapter summarizes the Assyrian and the Babylonian exiles, the Persian and Greek periods, and how these events affected the nation of Israel. It also covers the transition from intertestamental time to the Roman Empire as the New Testament authors knew it. The chapter provides a solid base for the study of the following chapters.

A noteworthy characteristic from this book is the maps, charts, graphics, tables, and pictures it includes. That is a very helpful aid for students who are in the process of getting familiar to the New Testament and its times and custom. The hardcover and format make this book resistant to manipulation without the inconvenient of heaviness.

In summary, its structure and content make this book an excellent resource for seminary students, pastors, Bible students, and Christians in general. If you are planning to teach introduction to the New Testament in your church or to a group of students who have never study the New Testament before, this could be one of the most helpful books you can use for that purpose. Highly recommended.

In encourage every Christian from the English speaking world to buy this book.

I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

What the New Testament Authors Really Cared About
By Peter Butler Jr.
What the New Testament Authors Really Cared About: a Survey of Their Writings, edited by Kenneth Berding & Matt Williams could well be used as a textbook in high school, college, or seminary to introduce the books of the New Testament and to give an overview about the most important aspects of the book form the point of view of the author. The book is very readable, but not dumbed down.

The editors have arranged their textbook by author of the New Testament, and each overview begins with answers to who, when, where, and why for each book. Then they look at the major themes presented, supplemented with a good number of charts. Maps, and on location pictures.

Through the text, there are side bubbles where the editors tell the read how each author would want us to respond to various texts. Each chapter ends with a brief summary, key words and concepts for review, and a list of further resources.

The book is sturdy and very useful – it could also be used by ministers to give them an overview/background to the book they are preaching from.

The editors work hard not to espouse a particular denomination, and they present variant vies and questions about certain texts, such as the ending of Mark (70).

I was pleased to see that – with the exception of Revelation – the editors dated the books prior to 70 AD (though I would also argue that Revelation was written earlier).

I was disappointed in the editors’ discussion about the rapture for two reasons: some scholars argue there is no such thing to be found in the Bible, and I agree with them (256).

That aside, this is a very useful first book on the New Testament canon (there is also an Old Testament companion volume).

Very nice intermediate NT survey
By Jeff
When I had the opportunity to review this book, I took it without deliberating because I reviewed its predecessor, What the Old Testament Authors Really Cared About, which I was very impressed with, and find very helpful as a reference tool.

The artwork is on the hardcover, which I really like, instead of a dust jacket. The paper and everything else about it is very high quality. Color is used throughout making it pleasing to look at, and the table of contents has a list almost four pages long of maps, photographs, and tables, to give you an idea of how illustrative it is. As with most things “illustrated”, there are many photographs that are fillers–they could probably have been taken anywhere. I may have been more judicious and not have to have photos everywhere just because. On the other hand, it would be hard to find completely relevant photographs to find for every space that an image would occupy.

It’s a New Testament introduction (or survey) of sorts, but written by those who teach undergraduates as opposed to those in seminary or graduate courses. The audience is for the less scholarly inclined and more for the regular person who would like to get a good overview of each book of the New Testament, and specifically what each inspired author was conveying to their original audience. There are also “more than one hundred applications highlighted in sidebars to clarify how the New Testament authors might apply their writings to Christians living in the twenty-first century.”

I found some of it to be somewhat of a summary of the Biblical book, which is rather simple, but the majority is on what each author emphasizes and is conveying to his audience.

The book is generally theologically neutral, but is bent towards the Calvinist end. This may be more apparent in some of the usual areas.

The first chapter, Walking in the Sandals of a First-Century Jew, is extremely helpful. This provides a backdrop of where the authors are coming from and who some of their original audience is.

There is no introduction to the gospels, which I at first found puzzling. I then realized that the book is focused on each author. However, What the Old Testament Authors Really Cared About has a very helpful introduction to the minor prophets. I think one for at least the Synoptic Gospels would have been helpful to show the differences even more than the similarities. There is an introduction to Paul’s writings which is very informative.

For those who would like something other than the mammoth New Testament introductions, like deSilva’s–which I have–and is literally the biggest (tallest) book I have, but something more comprehensive than what a study Bible would have in their introductions to each book, this is a good fit. I’m very glad to have it as a reference book.

I received this book free from Kregel Academics for the purpose of reviewing it. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255

From Chapter 1: Commonly known as Hampi, the site of the imperial city of Vijayanagara is located on the Tungabhadra river in central Karnataka, near the border with Andhra Pradesh. Vijayanagara's fame derives from its role as capital of South India's largest, wealthiest and most powerful kingdom; hence its name, 'City of Victory'. Yet Hampi is not only of interest for its historical prestige and magnificent ruins; its remarkable landscape, religious associations and ongoing archaeological investigations make it an outstanding destination of international significance.

ARCHITECTURE & ART

As the seat of imperial power, Vijayanagara was also a place of outstanding importance for architecture and the arts. The kings and their families, as well as their commanders and officers, not only erected buildings that bore their names, but also commissioned works of art, though none of these have survived the destruction of 1565. Since religious architecture was built of solid granite blocks laid without any mortar, it has survived to give a picture of the development of temple styles over a period of more than 200 years. The earliest Vijayanagara temples are the 14th-century shrines on Hemakuta hill. These elegant structures are built in a typical local idiom, comprising entrance porches with balcony seating, halls or mandapas with simple columns and double brackets, and shrines topped with pyramidal towers, all executed in granite. Temple architecture in the 15th century was expanded and elaborated, partly under the influence of the Tamil country incorporated into the Vijayanagara empire. The Hazara Rama temple in the middle of the royal centre is the finest example of this Tamil inspired idiom, as is evident from the finely worked decoration of its basement mouldings and plastered walls. The brick and plaster tower over the sanctuary that rises in a succession of diminishing storeys also follows the Tamil tradition. The sanctuary is approached through a spacious mandapa with entrance porches on three sides.

The climax of temple architecture at Vijayanagara occurred under the Tuluvas, beginning with Krishnadevaraya who added a magnificent mandapa to the Virupaksha temple complex at Hampi on the occasion of his coronation. He also built a multi-storeyed towered gateway, or gopura (replaced in later times), to serve as a monumental entrance to the newly renovated temple. Ultimately of Tamil origin, such spacious mandapas and lofty gopuras became hallmarks of the mature Vijayanagara style, to be repeated in all the later monuments of any magnitude at the capital, and reaching its artistic high point in the Vitthala temple complex. Like the other major complexes, the Vitthala is laid out in a linear sequence of manadapas leading to the shrine of the divinity surrounded by a narrow unlit passageway. Associated goddesses and related deities are accommodated in smaller shrines standing freely within the walled compound of the temple.

These architectural developments were accompanied by vibrant sculptural tradition, best seen in the mythological figures and narratives and the accessory maidens and guardians carved in relief onto granite columns, walls and ceilings. Highlights of Vijayanagara's sculptures include the reliefs on the Hazara Rama temple, where two entire cycles of Ramayana episodes are portrayed in stone, each episode of the story forming the subject of a separate composition. The royal reliefs on the outer compound walls of the same monument, portraying animals, soldiers and courtly women, are unique in South Indian art, as are the similarly royal subjects covering the granite sides of the nearby Mahanavami platform. Sculpture at Vijayanagara is also found on boulders scattered all over the site, either as relief compositions, such as Ramayana scenes or figures of Virabhadra and Hanuman as Anjaneya, or as gigantic three-dimensional monoliths of Ganesha or Narasimha. The technical virtuosity in the handling of the granite medium on this monumental scale is typical of Vijayanagara art.

Plaster sculptures also adorned the city's temples, as can be seen on sanctuary towers and gopuras where gods and goddesses are often flanked by courtly devotees. Similar plaster figures adorned the royal residences, but these are too fragmentary to be identified. Bronze icons must have been installed in temple sanctuaries, but not one example of the period survives at the site. (The brass images currently worshipped in the Virupaksha temple complex at Hampi are modern creations.)

Only the faintest indications of the Vijayanagara period painting are seen in the temples, and no details can be made out, though surely they would have portrayed mythological topics. (The well-preserved paintings on the ceiling of Krishnadevaraya's mandapa in the Virupaksha temple date only from the 19th-century renovation.) Murals may also have graced the halls of the royal palaces, but these have completely vanished, together with the dyed and printed cottons, woven velvets and embroidered cloths, as well as the ivory thrones and beds, and gilded metallic thresholds, door frames and roof pinnacles.

No account of the architecture of Vijayanagara would be complete without taking note of structures within the royal centre, such as the Lotus Mahal and elephant stables, built in a distinctly Islamic manner. Inspired by contemporary architecture of the neighbouring Bahmani kingdom, these and other buildings in similar style have Islamic pointed arches, vaults and domes, and are decorated with cut plasterwork in stylized floral forms. This creative interaction with the Deccan artistic tradition should be considered as a manifestation of the cosmopolitan spirit of Vijayanagara courtly culture.

A Medieval Empire
By Michael Gunther
The rich and powerful Hindu empire of Vijayanagara (mid-14th to mid-16th century), covering South India from coast to coast, excited the admiration of Islamic and European visitors alike: "The city... is such that the pupil of the eye has never seen a place like it, and the ear of intelligence has never been informed that there existed anything to equal it in the world" wrote Abdul Razzaq, a 15th-century envoy from Persia. Today, what is left of this once-great capital is preserved as a huge archaeological site (9 square miles in extent) that takes its name from the modern village of Hampi. Beautifully well-preserved features include temples, reviewing stands, elephant stables, bathing pavillions, aqueducts, reservoirs, giant statues of the elephant god Ganesh and the Vishnuite lion-avatar Narasimha, and the thrilling landscape of the Tungabhadra river valley with its surrounding hills, granite boulders that seem to have dropped from the sky, and legendary association with the home of Hanuman, the monkey hero of the Ramayana.
John M. Fritz and George Michell, as the directors for more than 20 years of the Vijayanagara Research Project, are ideally equipped to present this site to visitors. Beginning with 50 or so pages on the history, layout, architecture, etc. of Vijayanagara, the book continues with a 70-page tour of the site, and concludes with 30 pages of archival material (medieval visitors' reports, and selected early photographs of Alexander Greenlaw). Geared to the general reader, this illustrated guidebook is compact, inexpensive, and useful to have in hand when visiting the site.

The Tale-Teller, by Susan Glickman

A great story transcends the coldest winter.
The year is 1738. Jacques Lafargue, a wide-eyed young Frenchman, arrives in New
France aboard the Saint Michel. But before his Canadian adventure has a chance to
begin, he is detained at Quebec harbour by suspicious port officials. Their distrust
proves warranted: instead of a young man named Jacques Lafargue their captive turns
out to be a young woman named Esther Brandeau, and instead of answers to their
questions about who she is and where she came from, they are given tales of castaways
raised by apes, of blind lovelorn sailors and merciless pirates, of runaway slaves and
kindly desert nomads, and of other curiosities in a limitless world.
Few suspect the truth: Esther is a Jew, which by law prohibits her from entering
New France, and she is using her tale-telling to escape the restrictions placed upon
her race and gender. And no one - not even Esther herself - realizes the power
her stories have to open their hearts and minds to old dreams and new possibilities.
The Tale-Teller is a marvel. Susan Glickman takes readers on a journey of discovery
- starting with the fascinating true story of an obscure historical figure, and
continuing through an intimate and richly-detailed portrait of Canadian colonial
society, guided always by a map of wonders-to reveal timeless truths.

Review

"Glickman's mastery and maturity are evident in The Violin Lover.
Readers will be richly rewarded by the beauty and power of her artistry."

(The Globe and Mail)

"I've read it with great pleasure ... the storytelling as salty and exhilarating
as the seas over which Esther sails ... The sense of what New France might
have been like is so convincing ... I love Esther because she never tries to
pull at one's heartstrings, and yet she does."

Swept up in it
By Rafi M.
Somewhere around page 40, I realized I had lost contact with my surroundings. That's the best thing a book can do - take as to other places. It's a great story, a great slice of history, and a great, heart-touching tale in itself. Hated for it to end.
