I just finished reading the book written by Brigette Hyacinth "Purpose Driven Leadership.” a book worth its weight in gold. A very well organized, very concise and precisely written book, that goes beyond what I have learned in my masters program, where we learned different types of organizations, team building, and retaining individuals with specifics skill set, etc. This book is organized in three Sections.

Section One is made up of chapters one trough six.

Starting with chapter one deals with examining the type of individuals that make up a team, there ten types presented. In my career as a consultant, I have worked with every one of these people, starting with Team Lead, Proficient, Team Player, Achiever, Veteran, Wisenheimer, Apprentice, Militant, Freeloader, and Individualist. It describes how to handle each one of these personas as a leader, and how to get the most out of each of these individuals.

“Leadership: The art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.” -Dwight D. Eisenhower

Chapter two deals with how to build a strong and resilient team. It covers some important concepts for any kind team building; specifically it defines a common model for building teams, which was developed by B. W. Tuckman has defined four stages of team development: forming, storming, norming, and performing. Brigette goes on to define the ten steps of building an effective team:

1. Selecting the right people (very crucial step for any team building)
2. Communication of shared vision and clear purpose
3. Strategy and goals must be clear (what is your competitive advantage)
4. Maintain good communication for building trust and respect
5. Foster a strong company culture
6. Encourage team work
7. Support innovation and invest in learning
8. Treat your people right. Demonstrate that you value people
9. Asses and evaluate team building success and recognize and reward
10. Work hard play hard (celebrate)

It also touches on remote/virtual-dispersed teams, strategies for building team effectiveness in remote employee groups.

Chapter eleven deals with Leadership Framework, how to build a house that lasts.

The final chapter twelve deals with Purpose Driven Leadership, how to lead with a heart.

The two appendices have been developed from sections of the authors' other text, Human Sexuality. The intent is to provide options for more advanced learning while leaving the main text accessible to students with more limited backgrounds in biology. About the Author
Simon LeVay, Ph.D. is a British-born neuroscientist turned science writer and teacher. He has served on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, and has taught at Harvard, the University of California, and Stanford University, USA. LeVay has authored over 40 scientific studies; the best known of these is a 1991 report in Science that described a difference in brain structure between heterosexual and homosexual men. He is the author or coauthor of eleven books, including Gay, Straight, and the Reason Why: The Science of Sexual Orientation (Oxford University Press, 2011), and a historical novel, The Donation of Constantine (Lambourn Books, 2013). Janice Baldwin, Ph.D. and John Baldwin, Ph.D. are sociologists at the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA. They have been collaborators in numerous studies and coauthored many articles in the area of sexuality and sex education, as well as the textbook Behavior Principles in Everyday Life (Prentice Hall), now in its fourth edition. The Baldwins co-teach an undergraduate Human Sexuality course that is regularly voted Best Course at UCSB. They also teach two advanced seminar courses on the same topic, one of which has created a sex information website, SexInfoOnline (SexInfoOnline.com). The Baldwins have been named Best Professors on several occasions.

I was very disappointed with the quality of the book when I opened it. It didn't seem new to me because there is a crease on the upper right corner of the book's cover. I guess it is because the protection was pretty poor so it got damaged on the way.

This book sometimes was a bit confusing, but always held your interest..it wasn't until late in the book that you really begin to understand and grasp the true meanings of the many metaphors. A great spiritual guide...hard to always remember and put into practice the main lesson, but its important we try.

Binyamin Abrahamov is Emeritus Professor, Department of Arabic at Bar Ilan University. He has published five books including Divine Love in Islamic Mysticism (Routledge, 2003) and his research interests focus on Islamic Theology, Philosophy, Mysticism and Qur’anic exegesis.
