Tony Smibert is a painter based in Tasmania who has held more than 40 exhibitions worldwide. His paintings are in many public and private collections. Joyce H. Townsend is senior conservation scientist at Tate and the author of Turner’s Painting Techniques. They are coauthors of How To Paint Like Turner.

Great Place To Start!

This is a really excellent book, with simple advice, great illustrations and examples. Better than many 'how to' books that are all over the place, mixing genres and materials. I've found clear advice on some tricky processes that I've had all back-to-front. I'm coming to watercolor from drawing, and it's teaching me to be much less of a fusspot about pointless detail.
If I had any criticism, it would be the relatively small type size, which may be a burden to older readers.

An inspiring, beautiful, thoughtful book filled with great information about techniques and historic methods. Some of my favorite artists - who doesn't love to learn more about Turner's watercolor practices? Mr. Smibert's examples throughout are wonderful. An excellent companion to the earlier How to Paint like Turner.
