It's about REVISION and nobody seems to get that
By Spencer Ellsworth
It's the best book you'll ever read on REVISION.
I love this book, but a lot of people miss what it's about, because the author himself seems to think it's about first drafting. But very few people ever draft with the massive amount of preparation Frey suggests: a beat sheet, character interviews, a character's ruling passion, a premise, a defined crucible, a defined denouement and setup...
Most people start writing with only a few of these elements in mind, and discover along the way. Stephen King doesn't know how his books will end, which is probably why he's so effective at scaring us, because he can really empathize with the clueless characters. Most people discover character traits as they go, writing their character through some pre-created situations, watching their character take a different turn, etc. Few people can start from a pre-created premise, because the things you care about change as you put them on the page.
All Frey's tips--premise, ruling passion, beat sheets, defined crucible, falling conflict, creating indirect dialogue--happen in revision, when you look as a first draft and start pulling some order out of what your brain dumped on the page. Make a list of all Frey's elements and see if your book really can meet those requirements. Use his tips on indirect dialogue to improve what you've got.
It's no surprise that one gushing review on the back says "I wish I had found this book during my fourth rewrite of my novel."

"It Does Help To Follow Proven Formulas/Guidelines"
By Russell A. Rohde MD
"How To Write A Damn Good Novel", James N. Frey, St. Martin's Press, NY, 1987. ISBN: 0-312-01044-3, SC 174 pgs. Contents 3 pgs 8 " x 5 3/4".
Author Frey, a well-published novelist also taught novel and fiction writing courses at Univ. of Calif., Berkeley.
Like other authors, Frey developed and writes with strong witty prose that reinforces many of the ideas he shares with his students. Unlike some teachers on novel writing, he delves deeply into the essence of story-telling, back to the time of Aristotle and hammers home the essentials of dramatic writing: Homo fictus, character building, do's and don'ts, bonding, inner conflict, premise, storytelling, climax & resolution, viewpoint, dialogues, rewriting and Zen of becoming a novelist. Knowing essential elements of a novel clarifies for the would-be novelist those parts which are indispensable and those which are superfluous for a DGN.
Possibly, perhaps, reading the now numerous books on how to become a novelist make each discourse appear to have a touch of magic, but there are elements other than pure literary style at play: the mere fact of its being published is some testimonial, then too is the subject matter that may be the writer's concerted efforts to have something published and was for the now successful writer a stringent exercise for his own betterment. Frey's contribution, however, surpasses all these boundaries, for he's not only been well published but teaches the subject for Academia. This book's coverlet describes it as "A step-by-step no nonsense guide to dramatic storytelling", a depiction that tells it very well & truthfully. It's more than entertainment.

Deceptively easy or masterly easy?
By Nalin Nirula
James Frey clearly intends that the potential author-reader has a lot of fun by hugely encouraging the reader to write! He gives sound fundamentals for the creative writing process. An engagingly readable 'fundamentals-of-successfull-dramatic-writing' book, this Guide gives valuable practical analysis of the reasons why books succeed and why they fail. Frey supports his viewpoint with quotes and references to other masters of the subject of the art and craft of writing. At the same time he does hesitate to disagree with the experts, making his case convincingly.
Some very valuable sections--the neccessity for creating characters with a biography, a history; how fictional characters are different from real life people, while being identifiable with real people; the basic single premise-based message that is the reason for the story; the driving premises of the individual characters; what elements drive a story forward making in an interesting/readable way; identification of the dreaded 'writer's block' in its various forms and solutions for these; the self-editing and re-writing that Frey includes as an essential part of the writing process itself. And of course, the committed hard work that goes into the writing process.
In this book, in order to grasp the information in a usable way will require many re-readings, making connections and note-jotting. This will be true for published authors as well as for those starting out. (In that sense "How to Write.." is not quite a formula book and reads more like an interesting novel.)
A quick way to do this is, having got a point the author makes, to re-read the related section skipping the examples and going directly to the formulation-conclusion represented by those examples. These then become the reference points for understanding the framework of How to Write Damn Good Novel. This makes the reader work at really understanding the methods in a practical way. All said and done--Damn well done, James!
