A Teacher's best friend

The third edition of Sentence Combining just arrived. I can't wait to get to class Monday to start my students on these exercises! William Strong wrote another book about writing development, Coaching Writing, that I purchased at a writing workshop. The discussion of sentence combining as a development technique excited my teaching, but I don't have time (or energy) to prepare sentences for use with the technique. Sentence Combining fills that slot perfectly. This activity greatly improved my student's ability to revise their writing. They were able to see that revision is a process. For some it was a true "ah ha!" moment! The techique I found in the first section of Coaching Writing is the focus of Sentence Combining A Composing Book. I can't praise these two books enough. Every English teacher at my high school has heard me praise William Strong's work, and several have adopted his strategies. You can't go wrong with this purchase.

An excellent resource for sentence composing and editing

This book is a classic now, and it should be. Research in writing instruction has demonstrated that students who work on sentence combining do improve as writers. The book presents the student with short kernel sentences to combine into longer, more complex structures. In combining, students stretch into learning to control sentences for length, pace, and complexity. When they edit their sentences, they practice the revision skills good writers all use. I have used this book successfully with remedial and entry level college students; it would also be appropriate for high school students and advanced intermediate students. It is not a technical grammar text, and can be useful without a sophisticated knowledge of grammar. The selections are engaging and are effectively presented in order of difficulty. This would be a useful text for home schoolers at the high school level.

After two years of fighting, Great Britain felt confident that the American rebellion would be crushed in 1777, the "Year of the Hangman." Britain devised a bold new strategy. Turning its attention to the colonial frontiers, especially those of western New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, Britain enlisted its provincial rangers, Tories, and allied warriors, principally from the Iroquois Confederacy, to wage a brutal backwoods war in support of General John Burgoyne's offensive as it swept southward from Canada in an attempt to cut the colonies in half, divert the Continental Army, and weaken its presence around British-occupied New York City and Philadelphia.

Burgoyne's defeat at Saratoga sent shock waves through the British command. But the efforts along the frontier under the direction of Sir John Johnson, Colonel John Butler, and the charismatic Mohawk leader, Joseph Brant, appeared to be impairing the American ability to conduct the war. Destroying Patriot settlements and farms across hundreds of miles of frontier, the British and Indian forces threatened to reduce Continental army enlistment, and more importantly, precious food supplies. Following the massacres at the well-established colonial settlements of Wyoming, Pennsylvania, and Cherry Valley, New York, the Continental Congress persuaded General George Washington to conduct a decisive offensive to end the threat once and for all. Brewing for years, the conflict between the Iroquois and colonists would now reach its deadly climax.

Charging his troops "to not merely overrun, but destroy," Washington devised a two-prong attack to exact American revenge. The largest coordinated American military action against American Indians in the war, the campaign shifted the power in the east, ending the political and military influence of the Iroquois, forcing large numbers of loyalist to flee to Canada, and sealing Britain's fateful decision to seek victory in the south. I read this book because I have Loyalist ancestors who were members of Butler's Rangers and almost certainly participated in the battles described in such detail. My ancestors, William Pickard and his 2 sons James and Benjamin, two privates and a drummer boy, did not get mentioned in the book, but that was not a problem since around 900 people were in Butler's Rangers. They survived to move to Canada after the war and they started large families after leaving their homes in Tryon County.

The book has a nice section on the key personalities that I found useful since there were Butlers on both the Loyalist and Patriot sides. The book would be improved by detailed maps. Unless you can imagine where places like Tioga, Unidilla and Stone Arabia are, you will read the book in front of your computer with Google Maps open as I did. The book would also be improved with contemporary photos of the battle sites; some of these, like the Battle of Newton, were easily found on the web.

I learned much from the book and enjoyed it. It was very interesting to see that the Rangers contained a good number of Black soldiers who lived with the rest of the Rangers and the Indians. It was also interesting to see how both sides courted the Indians and tried to win their support. The book really makes the Revolution look much more like a civil war than people typically think.

Well Researched and Written Book about the Indian Wars during the American Revolution

This is a well researched and written book about the Indian wars on the New York and Pennsylvania frontiers during the American Revolution. It tells the stories of the Wyoming Massacre, the Cherry Valley Massacre and the Sullivan campaign providing the details on each but in a very readable format. It also provides some details on other not so well known events on the frontiers like the situation around Pittsburgh and in western Pennsylvania. Consequently, this book fills in a gap in the American Revolution and worth the purchase for any individual interested in reading more about that period.

Choose Your Alliances Wisely!

After two years of fighting in America with limited success, the British felt they were, to coin a popularized modern term, in a bit of a quagmire, and sought a new strategy for their overseas war. The new strategy involved moving the war away from the more populated northeast and into the western frontier. This move would not only disperse the already diminutive American forces, but would also allow Britain to utilize its strongest North American allied force, the Iroquois Indian Confederacy.

Glenn William's book, THE YEAR OF THE HANGMAN: WASHINGTON'S WAR AGAINST THE IROQUOIS chronicles the events that took place in those western frontier skirmishes and battles. The book derives its name for the year, 1777, which had become popularly known at the time as the `year of the hangman' due to the three sevens appearance of gallows when written, though the majority of the events actually occurred in 1779. Though using that title for his book was too good of an opportunity to pass up, William's title is slightly misleading as to the dates of the primary events.

The Iroquois, though primarily located in Western and Central New York, were quite possibly the strongest Indian nation of North America for a span of over 500 years. Their control reached across the Great Lakes into Central Wisconsin and their rise to prominence came at the cost of driving out, and driving to extinction, numerous other Indian tribes of the region. They were, to be sure, a force to be reckoned with.

Both the Americans and the British had heavily lobbied allegiance with the Iroquois, but in the end, the Indians felt their best chance for future lay at the hands of the British and consequently, four of the six main tribes of the Iroquois sided with the British. This error in judgment would prove fatal to the Iroquois nation, when, as a primary result of the Sullivan Expedition, the Iroquois nation would virtually lose all of its military and political power.

While the Sullivan Expedition is the primary focus of William's book, other major events are deftly chronicled as well, such as the Battle of Oriskany and the Wyoming Valley attacks. By 1979, Gen. Washington had successfully developed the army making it capable of taking the fight to the Indians and literally destroying their economical stability and rendering them harmless, not just for the remainder of the revolution, but into the subsequent years of frontier settlement into the traditional Iroquois homelands.

That Washington was able to develop a force the size of the Sullivan Expedition (5000 men) is in and of itself, a testament to Washington's military leadership abilities and, though today, only an afterthought in Revolutionary history, stands as one of the General's greatest military accomplishments.

This is good reading. Glenn William's had put together a readable and valuable presentation of a rather forgotten aspect of America's fight for independence.

Buy it! Read it! Do what it says! Stand out!

This book is about more than someone trying to deliver their best, sometimes. It is about a fundamental change, a transformation, which has to come from within. Speak Up, Show Up, and Stand Out drives home the message that personal transformation requires 100% willingness to change ourselves instead of trying to change others or situations.

50/50 ain’t doing nothing. 99% won’t do it. This book talks about willingness! And this is the dilemma. Unless I am 100% willing to change, I will be ignorant of any issues. I can conveniently project any chaos around me on some external source causing the loss of peace in myself and others.

Now why would I do that? Because, as Loretta points out, it will keep me unconscious and any problems that are out there will have nothing to do with me, it won’t be my fault!

This book lays out a clear roadmap for a team, leaders, a department, right down to oneself!

Even I as an individual will have to answer the question:

1. Am I playing fair with myself? I have to get 100% clear about the most important questions which need to be answered at the onset of any undertaking.
2. What is my purpose?
3. What is the outcome I want to see!

Loretta’s new book offers a powerful perspective. Her focus on authenticity and trust in her new book continues to reveal useful and unexpected leadership paths. I have had positive experiences using Loretta’s “commitment to each other’s success principle” that she writes about in Speak Up, Show Up, and Stand Out.

The world is replete with authors who articulate useful hints, suggestions, rules, etc. I’ve had personal experience in participating in the Malandro Consulting Group training programs. For me, the most impressive aspect of the Malandro Consulting Group is not simply their ideas, but the way Loretta and her excellent team apply those ideas, in real time, with people struggling, arguing, fighting, resigning and finally learning how to work together in a way that preserves the individual in all of us, not only without compromising the result, but elevating it. It's a great reminder about how consistent and vigilant we must become ...

I’ve purchased the Kindle version of Speak Up, Show Up, and Stand out and I am half-way through it. I am also re-reading Dr. Malandro’s book, Fearless Leadership. I am reporting reviews from both books. There is a part of me that wishes I could find a flaw that would constructively illuminate something, but I haven’t and frankly I have no confidence that I will.

Fearless Leadership provides a powerful approach for building high performance teams and leader’s. It makes you think and gives you a roadmap for achieving a new level of success.

Dr. Malandro’s new book, Speak Up, Show Up, and Stand Out broadens the audience to include people at all levels in an organization and drills down to specifics by providing practical scripts and guidelines for how to communicate effectively in today’s environment.

Speak Up, Show Up, and Stand Out talks about so much of what is necessary for many of my clients right now. This is especially true in making expectations clear and being aware of the unintended impacts of misused e-communication that the author writes about. In meetings and calls with my clients, it's quickly apparent how we humans live in our own world and standards. SUSUSO speaks to this precisely. It's a great reminder about how consistent and vigilant we must become if we are to bring accountability to what we're doing and achieve a new level of success.

On a broader level I hear a message in both Fearless Leadership and Speak Up, Show Up, and Stand Out that real, sustained communication and leadership effectiveness requires a high level of personal accountability. In other words, we must live by high personal standards or what Loretta refers to as the 9 Communication Rules. When reading these two books, I often stop and reflect on business, political, social leaders who have stood the test of time. They all seem to be modeling what these books are teaching.

I recommend both books for people who are serious about transforming their personal effectiveness (regardless of title or position). If you want to transform your organization and team, these books are the Holy Grail. Read them. Study them. Apply them.

About the Author
Alan J. Marcus is a Professor of Finance in the Wallace E. Carroll School of Management at Boston College. His main research interests are in derivatives and securities markets. He is co-author (with Zvi Bodie and Alex Kane) of the texts Investments and Essentials of Investments. Professor Marcus has served as a research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Professor Marcus also spent two years at Freddie Mac, where he helped to develop mortgage pricing and credit risk models. He currently serves on the Research Foundation Advisory Board of the CFA Institute.

Professor of finance and economics at the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies at the University of California, San Diego. He has been visiting professor at the Faculty of Economics, University of Tokyo; Graduate School of Business, Harvard; Kennedy School of Government, Harvard; and research associate, National Bureau of Economic Research. An author of many articles in finance and management journals, Professor Kane’s research is mainly in corporate finance, portfolio management, and capital markets, most recently in the measurement of market volatility and pricing of options.

Zvi Bodie is professor of finance and economics at Boston University School of Management. He holds a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has served on the finance faculty at Harvard Business School and MIT’s Sloan School of Management. Professor Bodie has published widely on pension finance and investment strategy in leading professional journals. His books include Worry-Free Investing: A safe Approach to Achieving your Lifetime Financial Goals and Foundations of Pension Finance. Professor Bodie is managing director of Integrated Finance Limited, a specialized investment bank and financial engineering company. He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Pension Research Council.

Limited solution details. Cheap pages and binding.

Not much of a description on many solutions. Just provides answers. Not much help.
Also the paper quality is REALLY REALLY cheap. You can see thru the next page's text and that's really annoying especially if you try to take notes or use highlighter. Bleeds thru the pages behind. So horrible!

Worth the purchase

The solutions are pretty limited in steps to solution, so you will need to know the basics to understand some of the assumed steps to completion. Overall, I am glad I had it to help confirm the final answers from the problems. I would recommend purchase if you will not have another source for the answers.

Very helpful but could use a little improvement

Very helpful for most problems but there are some where an answer is provided but no feedback on how that answer was achieved. Most everything has the detail but there are some that don't that is why this doesn't get 5 stars.
