About the Author
Paul N. Friga, Ph.D., worked with McKinsey & Co. at its Pittsburgh office as an associate consultant. He holds an MBA and a Ph.D. in strategy from the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina and has conducted numerous consulting projects throughout his career and continues to work with Fortune 500 companies throughout the world. He has also worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers as a management consultant and continues to research the consulting industry. Dr. Friga is an associate professor at the Kenan-Flagler Business School, where he teaches courses in management consulting and strategy. He also serves as the director of the consulting concentrations.

Good Field Guide, Other Parts of Trilogy Also Illuminate

While this reviewer is initially commenting on "The McKinsey Engagement," he also looked at both "The McKinsey Mind" and "The McKinsey Way" as the books really do inform one another as a trilogy. As Rasiel comments in the first book, "3" is a "magic" number at McKinsey as most pronouncements there seem to come in threes (see page 3).

"The McKinsey Engagement" basically fills in and conveys the McKinsey problem solving method as it can be applied by a team. Its tenor is much more tactical than the other two books, an appropriate field guide for a business school or other group seeking to proceed and learn along this path. Apparently, for this reason, the author complements the core McKinsey material with other information to provide more detailed information on running a TEAM with a FOCUS on this method (acronyms for the main ideas in its two main emphases). So taken in this light the author succeeds in what he is trying to do. Although, one should also consult the other volumes depending on one's interest.

For instance, Friga's book deals with the various aspects of "The McKinsey Engagement" such as forming hypotheses, being MECE (i.e. mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive), constructing issue/decision trees, and collecting data as they are applied by a team. However, his work with Rasiel in "The McKinsey Mind" provides more of a rationale for the use of these elements and their background (e.g. the benefit of structure, the combination of intuition and data, gut instincts and experience, as part of fact-based decision making). Whereas, Rasiel's solo effort in "The McKinsey Way" discusses the manner in which the consulting firm operates and addresses client problems (as well as what it means for an individual in the organization). The reference to the culture and discipline as similar to the Jesuits, the reliance on charts (as described in more detail by Gene Zelazny elsewhere) and other tidbits conjure smiles in recognition.

One thing that drew this reviewer to the book initially was the mention of Barbara Minto, among the author's other mentors, accomplices, and friends. Minto developed and authored the "The Pyramid Principle: Logic in Writing and Thinking" which appears to be the first work that articulated the approach used in McKinsey. It is interesting to see the parallel's between the Friga and Rasiel books, Minto's, and the approaches used in major consulting firms such as McKinsey, PwC, and others (Elizabeth Haas Edersheim's book on Marvin Bower as well as Duff McDonald's "The Firm" are also illuminating - see my review on the latter).

So, if you want an applied methodology with examples try "The McKinsey Engagement;" if you want more description and depth consider the "The McKinsey Mind;" if you want to better understand the firm and its context seek out "The McKinsey Way." In 1949 Racah, in a paper on rare earth spectra, showed that similar coefficients occur in other situations. Immediately a number of studies of the coefficients were begun, notably by Jahn, with his applications in nuclear physics. In the years since then a large number of physicists and chemists have added to the development of a general theory of the coefficients, or have produced specialized tables for a specific application. Applications now range from high-energy physics to biology.

Comprehensive and Useful Guide

This is a treatment of Group Theory applications to problems in quantum chemistry and physics, especially spectroscopy, although as the author points out very early, there is no reason to limit the applications to spectroscopy. This book has been an invaluable aid in my research, it is concise, and well-thought out. A good understanding of linear algebra is required, and it would be helpful to have some prior aquaintance with group theory - perhaps Volker Heine's "Group Theory in Q.M." is a good start. But Butler proves Schur's lemmas on page 12, so be prepared!. The Tables have been more than useful as well, they generalize the 3-j, and 6-j symbols (and there are a few 9-j and 12-j's as well) for groups below SO3, which have already been tabulated in the Rotenberg-Bevins-Metropolis...classic. These extra 3-j's become necessary in spectroscopic problems when the actual point group symmetry is invoked. You will require Rotenberg et al., or else use the 3-j/6-j algorithm in Mathematica for the SO3 case, since Butler does not provide them. Butler develops a theorem for the agreement of parity between his 'natural labels' of irreducible representations and that of the underlying interaction which I have employed in considering the selection rules on superexchange matrix elements, but it is in fact a very general theorem. I have heard it said from recent physics graduates that they no longer learn group theory. That is a shame, and may very well change in the future, as these methods are quite powerful and can be enlarged to investigate the dynamics of statistical systems, not just simple, spherical ('atomic') quantum systems. So, if you're one of these deprived physics graduates, this volume is a real eye-opener, as it will introduce another way of thinking about physical problems to you, and that boon is sometimes worth it in itself, just as learning path integral techniques often is, even when they don't help you solve any particular problem, they nonetheless help you gain a fresh perspective on any particular problem you might be confronted with.

Dubious Information of Unknown Provenance

I have not yet tried any of the included recipes, so cannot comment on their effectiveness.
The author refers to many clinical studies purporting to prove the curative properties of cinnamon & honey, but gives no references; therefore, it is impossible to determine their value or veracity.
The book is sloppily edited, with numerous typographical and grammatical errors.

I'm reading War of the Dwarves next!

The main heroes in fantasy novels are usually the special human 'chosen one', magicians and elves - so a story where the dwarves take center stage totally got my attention. The story is set in Girdlegard, an enchanted land wherein for hundreds & hundreds of years, the dwarven kingdoms have protected the borders against evil. I started reading the first chapter (prologue) on a whim and just couldn't quite put it down afterwards. This one was a winner - a really well-written prologue about how the dwarves of the Fifthling Kingdom fell victim to the evil of the Perished Land, thus opening up Girdlegard to invasion by evil creatures. That first chapter had heroic dwarf characters and epic battle scenes marked by betrayal and grand tragedy. Sucked me in for sure!

Then the novel goes into the present story proper, and we are introduced to the hero, the scholarly blacksmith dwarf and human foundling Tungdil. He ends up on a mission to save not just his fellow dwarves, but also all the good men and elves of Girdlegard. Markus Heitz doesn't really try to break new ground with his fantasy creatures - elves are elves, dwarves are dwarves, orcs are orcs... same as in 'Lord of the Rings'. He does add new evil creatures like the alfar (twisted elves), and he also give the dwarves a complex and well-structured society & culture (including politics) that hasn't really been delved into that much. And since Tungdil has grown up only amongst humans & knows as little about dwarves as we do, we discover dwarven-society with him as he goes about his mission.

Tungdil is a really likeable character, and I've always had a soft touch for the outsider / nerd turned hero. And the band of characters who end up being on Tungdil's team are a likeable (if mismatched) bunch too - a pair of dwarven warrior-twins, an alcoholic dwarven mason, a drama troupe that includes human (and not quite human) actors & prop master, a rebel magician & her mysterious demon bodyguard - I found myself just drawn in on all the action as Tungdil traveled across Girdlegard before the final battle with Nod'onn (former good magician who is turned by the Perished Land into evil).

I have to say though that the rest of the novel doesn't quite measure up to the brilliance of the first chapter; the quality of the writing becomes a bit uneven after that. For some strange reason, Mr Heitz writes majority of the dwarven characters really well, but fails when he has to write humans. Any chapter that concentrated on the humans (kings, magicians) ended up with stilted dialogue and wooden, flat and poorly developed characterization. Another disappointment for me was how weak Mr Heitz' villains were - from the supposedly villain-to-end-all-villains Nod'onn to the smaller villains - such as Bislipur (a dwarf who becomes Tungdil's adversary).

All in all though, I had a rip roaring time going through Tungdil's journey with him, and if the journey seemed a bit too long and circuitous at times with a bit too many X saves the day coincidences (the book really needed a good editor to trim-off many unneeded scenes), well, gosh-darn-it, I liked Tungdil too much and found the story too entertaining at that point to give up. I'm looking forward to reading the second book in the series 'The War of the Dwarves' next!

"The Dwarves" begins an exciting saga following Tungdil Bolofar, an orphaned dwarf raised by humans. The German translated novel presents a phenomenal story packed with great characters, a rich history, and a fun adventure. The blend of excellent political maneuvering and kick "axe" battles in the name of questing generates an instant classic.

I haven't enjoyed a storyline as much in over a year and highly recommend the series to any fan of the fantasy genre.

Edward Field's collections of poetry include "Counting Myself Lucky" (Black Sparrow) and "After the Fall: Poems Old and New" (Pittsburgh University Press). Frank to its very core- classic travel narrative.

Kubuli Days is a highly personal travel narrative. It's one of those self-examining stories in vvhich the author is not afraid to reveal his haplessness and his occasional naivety. ....honest through and through and near the end I regretted very much that his trip and his tale vvas coming to a close. One gets to knovv the man but also the lost times of Afghanistan - pre-Taliban, pre-American incursion, pre Russian-invasion. Invaluable and touching.

About the Author
Kendall Hayes began her adult entrepreneurial career as a cosmetologist in 1986. She worked as a hair stylist and hair- care technician at various salons throughout Philadelphia. In 1994, she, along with three partners launched a general contracting company in Philadelphia. Ms. Hayes played a pivotal role in the company’s growth and transformation into a commercial steel erection company. From 1998 until 2001, under a Mentor/Prot�g� program with Shoemaker Construction Company, Inc., Ms. Hayes managed multiple construction projects. In 2001, Ms. Hayes took her experience in sales and building management to the African American Chamber of PA NJ & DE, where she managed the daily operations of the corporate office, including membership outreach, establishing alliances to develop membership benefits, coordination of events including marketing content for event and subscription related initiatives for over 500 businesses while maintaining budgets, venue, vendor and entertainment negotiations. In 2005 she started Hayes Technical Solutions (HTS) Inc. HTS, Inc., providing an array of administrative services to small businesses to enhance their visual identity and strategically plan solutions for the immediate and long-term demands of her clients. The very first contract commissioned Kendall to act as an Event Coordinator Consultant for the Natural Organized Woman Sorority Incorporated. Over the years, other clients have included Northwest EPIC Stakeholders, BSI International, Inc. the SANKOFA Afterschool Program at the Canaan Baptist Church and The African American Business Alliance of Eastern North Carolina just to name a few. Currently Ms. Hayes is Founder and President of HER… Healed Empowered and Restored. Founded in 2010, the organization focuses on coordinating workshops for girls age 10-16 to help them (1) identify destructive behaviors at an early stage,(2) provide preventive measures and (3) allow the young ladies to learn from the mistakes of others. She discovered that there was an underlying issue that many women had either experienced in the past or were currently dealing with, but no one really talked about or addressed it. It was the issue of women who loved men who slept with other men - men on the down low.

Her debut project "Seasons of Hope" is a must read for women as your health could depend on it. This informative story enlightens on marriage and divorce, and presents issues of consideration that lead to both. A book written for all.

Enjoying this body of work so much. The characters leap off of the page and I can just about see this story playing out right in front of my face. Seasons of Hope will make an exciting and intriguing movie. Kendall Hayes is on to something here and I can't wait to see it all unfold. What she speaks about is real ladies. You'll have much to ponder even as you read. Great Book!

This book is a must read for all women. I read this book in one day. It was an eye opener. Very enlightening and informative. A real page turner. It really kept my interest, made me happy , sad, cry and cheer! I must say that this has been the best book I have read in a very long time!
