About the Author
Van Hipp is Chairman of American Defense International, Inc. He has been involved in defense and security matters since 1990 when he was appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Reserve Forces and Mobilizations. Later, he was named by then Secretary of Defense, Dick Cheney, to be the Principal Deputy General Counsel of the Navy. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Hipp served on active duty in both Operation Desert Storm and Operation Restore Democracy. Mr. Hipp is a frequent writer and speaker on defense and international policy issues. He and his family reside in the Washington, DC area.

Good read on the truth behind terrorism

I think this is an excellent book on terrorism. Van gives up an in depth look at what is happening in the Isalm world and the truth behind the myths. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in national security of our country. This book is well written and easy read. The timing of this book is right on with what is happening in our world today.

Good info on current events in the world. The book is just one guys opinion but he has some great ideas and insight. Unfortunately American politics will prevent most of the ideas being considered. We wouldn't want to offend anyone in the name of safety for Americans now would we?

This is an extremely informative read that goes to new depths on the topic of radical Islam. Other reviewers have thoroughly conveyed the relevance of this book on that matter, so I will touch on the fact that this book calls for a decreased dependence on oil and the development of the nuclear power industry. Regardless if you believe buying oil from countries that house these terrorist organization actually benefit those groups, oil reserves are finite. The world will eventually run out of oil and the industries that rely on that oil with cease to exist. Because of our society's heavy reliance on oil, America is heavily dependent upon other countries and in the unstable global economy, that is not a good place to be.

Nuclear power is the most "green" energy source that can efficiently produce power. It is greener than solar, wind, and hydroelectric and safer than oil refineries. There is a lot of hesitancy in America to further the nuclear industry after Three Mile Island (which resulted in 0 deaths) because of the way the media portrayed the incident. At that time the NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission wasn't performing their duties to the standards that we as a society have come to expect. With that being said, the NRC has made huge steps to regulate the nuclear industry by placing heavy regulations on plants currently operating and even more stringent requirements for plants that are set for construction. Nuclear power is the way of the future and other countries, such as China, have already started making a huge push in that direction.

In summary, this book is a great read because it doesn't just talk about terrorism, it (as the title says) talks about how to fight and defeat it.

Has some good content, but low quality pop-ups

I bought this book after having bought "Encyclopedia Prehistorica" which I love. The popups in Architechure popup are low quality. The content is pretty good, though. There is some good reading and good history, but if you want that, go buy a history book.

If I would have bought this pop-up book first, I probably never would have bought another pop-up. My recommendation: go buy "Encyclopedia Historica" by Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart, the most fantastic popup I have ever seen. I got it here at Amazon.com (which I also love!). Sorry about the bad review, but I am just being honest.

A disapointing book

Why will I give generously only 2 stars ? Because this book is an exact copy of the beautiful book on Architecture from Ron von der Meer. Same size, same model. Of course different pop-ups, but badly made, opening with a too much easy and wellknown pop-up of a Pyramid. I agree with M. Langton about the very bad Chrysler Building. All around the book, ridiculous thin paper folding without any interest. At the end of the book, there is a thick box with no use. Where von der Meer in the same kind of box did put a lot of nice things to use in it. No, this book does absolutly not deserve it's extremly high expensive price, compare to the quality and low price of the last Sabuda's book.

One must say that the chinese are actually the best pop-up maker regarding quality.

The popups are very very complex. Almost too much. Most in fact do not work as well as I would have liked. The last page with the telescoping tower did not popout well either. But never mind, it is still a great book. Each page has many many smaller but excellent pop ups. Besides the great popups, the text is well done, important periods are covered but I doubt you would buy this book for actual reading. It is a super gift or a "collection" book.

A bible to the Mod movment!

This book is stuffed with detailed information on the Mod culture of the early 60's. The author goes on and on telling whatever he can on what was going on, how they dressed, what they liked, the drugs, the scooters...everything! That's not all of it. That book contians thousands of black and white photographs of the scene (images of the kids danceing, riding and strutin' themselves across the beaches). This book tells the history of mod from it's humble begings to it's sad end in the mid-sixties. I would recomend this book to anyone who is interested in Mod. I would also suggest viewing the movie "Quadrophenia" for more of an idea of what Mod was.

An aphorism for clean living under difficult circumstances

Well, I used to get mad trying to look cute like them, me and my mates spent hours reading it! I translated it into Italian and photocopied my translation handing it out at the mod meetings held in Rimini each easter. Now I'm past those days but sweet memories still keep coming back.
A reportage from the past with fresh and amazing photos, but you'll find that style is not a fashion!
Five stars is my rating, but is not an impartial one!

About the Authors Frederic H. Sonnenschmidt, a certified master chef, is Culinary Dean at The Culinary Institute of America. A member of the 1976 United States National Culinary Team at the Food Olympics in Frankfurt, Frederic Sonnenschmidt has won two gold medals and has been the recipient of 20 first prizes in various culinary competitions. Dissapointing

Just by looking at the cover page and the other reviewer comments, I thought I was buying a great book.
The book has very few pictures and these pictures not always represent items you will find in the book. For instance, there is a full-page photograph of a terrific morel terrine, whose recipe is missing in the book!.
The book is a collection of recipes rather than an instruction book on decoration, menu layouts, buffet planifications, etc, although these issues are shortly covered.
To be honest, I find the book out of date. Cold food goes well beyond what this book offers. Too much gelatine and liver. A much better book is "Garde Manger : The Art and Craft of the Cold Kitchen" which I highly recommend.

Good and Bad Moments

I have a real affinity for books set in the Penal Colony Days of Australia. I like the interesting historical dynamics of this moment and what it might mean to start anew.

Here we have a female convict who does not escape the horrors of being a woman in a penal state controlled by men and does her time on her back. This book is not graphic but it isn't shy about the harshness of what it would have been like to be in this situation.

Our hero is a widower who has undergone a physical transformation into a much more muscular and active man due to the labor required of him on his journey from England. He is a free settler looking to start over.

We have a lovely marriage of connivence plot which is complicated by some very real and compelling factors. The conflicts are spot on and well done and the love story that develops is a touching one. The historical details are finely wrought.

Overall, I enjoyed this book but I didn't love it.

Here is why...

I didn't need the heroine to be falsely accused. She could be there wrongly but I didn't like how much the hero cared that she hadn't done it.

If I had read the first book in the series (which I haven't), I think I would really dislike this book.

The hero and heroine from that book are very featured in this one but we get no alone time with them or anything for their point of view. I don't like much of what the hero says about his wife nor how his wife is in many moments. Also, the hero from the last book has some past actions that come to light that aren't good, let's say. And we don't really process those and in fact the couple ends up separated over it. What the hero did, in the past, was wrong. It made him really unlikeable to me as there is never an acknowledgment of how and why it was wrong.

The plot was too fast. The love story need more time to develop.

However, it was still a good read and I will try this writer again.

I was given this book for my honest review. So, there you have it.

Continuing Story from The Convict's Bounty Bride Is Engaging From Cover to Cover With Love Growing on Australia's Frontier

A historical romance with its backdrop Australia when it was still a convict colony enticed me into reading this one. I am so glad that I did because I was engaged in the story from cover to cover. The author did a superb job of both telling a story and telling of a historical time that was rough, raw and gritty.

Samuel Biggs, who was once a soft-bodied man of business for his employer, lost his wife and decided to sail for the frontier of Australia to put his grief behind him and start anew. His former employer, James Hunter, an ex-convict, welcomes him and agrees to hire him as an overseer on his farm. James' wife, Thea, gets that look in her eye like she is planning something like matchmaking, but he has no intentions of ever taking a wife again.

Colleen Malone has had it rough. She is wrongfully accused alongside her cousin, shipped out as a convict to Australia, taken in charge by a man who runs a brothel, and forced to whore herself out. Now that she is expecting a child, Danny, her procurer, has no use for her and sends her back to The Factory where she will do hard labor and likely lose her child and maybe die there.

Samuel is finagled by Thea to choose a housekeeper from the first rate women at the prison, but before they even get inside he is petitioned by a woman breaking up stone outside. He sees the blistered hands and that she is unaccustomed to her task. He does the unprecedented thing and bypasses the first raters for this third rate woman. Unfortunately, the matron informs him that those who have been sent back to prison can only leave when their time is up or they are taken as wives. He reasons that if he has a wife that Thea will leave him be and it can just be an arrangement and not a true marriage.

Colleen can't believe her good fortune. She has a husband now and her freedom, but then she realizes that its not that simple. Samuel has no intentions of a true marriage and she needs that so he'll believe her child is his own. And then there's that issue that Samuel's employer was once one of her customers and the sneaky housegirl convict knows this. Colleen just has to get Samuel past his grief for his wife so that he'll accept her as a wife in all ways and she has to figure out how to keep that other secret too. So much and why does her tummy flip-flop whenever her big handsome husband is around? It has to be the baby, right?

This story achieved a wonderful balance of character development, romance, plot and pacing along with weaving in the details and descriptions of the time. It's like a fairytale the way Colleen was wrongfully convicted and had a drudgery life until Samuel came along. Though, Samuel and Colleen are no insipid fairytale characters. Both have seen a lot of life and have a realistic and pragmatic view of things. There's no freakish behavior when things are at their worst. They display true emotions for what is going on and I loved the slow to build romance between them. They are both so strong and enduring considering all that happened. I just loved spending time in their story and was sad to see it end.

Now, I should say that even though it isn't noted anywhere that I could see, this is really a sequel story that works best when The Convict's Bounty Bride is read first. That is James and Thea's story that carries on a little into this book running as a minor plot thread behind Samuel and Colleen's story until near the end when it all comes together. I wasn't into James and Thea's story like I was this one, but I enjoyed seeing what happened to them after they returned to Australia.

My only real niggle with this book is that it ended abruptly leaving a few things hanging that I would have enjoyed seeing resolved. I felt that way at the end of the first one not realizing there would be another book so with that in mind, I'll give the benefit of the doubt that there is more to come to finish off the other plot threads.

All in all, this is a fabulous historical romance that is authentic and yet very romantic. Its a perfect blend and will appeal to those who enjoy just a few extra pinches of spice in their romance to heat things up nicely and want something a little grittier and real in the way of their historicals.

Colleen is a strong young woman despite everything that happened to her, and I understood that, afraid of being sent back to prison (where they would take her baby) she decides to have her new husband believe the child is his, and to hide the fact their employer was a client of the whorehouse where she was. As she has constant remorse, that make things much more believable. I was amused when she thinks the signs of desire she feels with her husband are dizzy spells due to her pregnancy, or when she asks Samuel shamelessly if he is a Molly when he refuses to consummate their union (after seven years in a brothel you must have lost lots of taboo about sexuality).

Samuel is rather narrow-minded, he sees things in black or white, not many grays in his life, and he has ideas on a lot of things. I even found him cruel in some of his reactions, even if it was impulsiveness that made him talk. His difficulties to deal with his wife's past when she begins to be important for him are quite well done. And at the same time on other points he can be kind and comprehensive, like when he learns about Colleen's pregnancy and thinks immediately that even if the baby isn't his it will be his child all the same.

The beginning is really fast, and the synopsis occurs in the first three chapters. In fact all the beginning of the story, of which I dreaded the distressing side (and at the same time which would have brought so much depth) was quickly finished in three chapters and some sentences here and there. There is also a timeline problem, with details making me think a lot more time had passed than in reality. For example I had the impression there was several weeks between the moment the heroine is sent back to prison and the one where she seduces her husband when in reality there was only six days.

I was waiting for a big saga a la Barbara Wood or Colleen McCullough, and we're far from it. His convict wife is a story that may be not deepened enough but enjoyable, with convincing characters and an unusual and interesting setting.

Not your typical Mushy romance.

First of all, I would just like to say that Elizabeth Lowell is an exceptional writer. Her storys never lack depth or substance, and this book is certainly no exception.
This story involves the beautiful Cat Cochran, a photographer who lives and breathes her work. She is a woman who works day and night so that she can support her mother and two siblings. She is a woman who has been hurt by an unforgiving past.
Travis Danvers is a self made rich man. His past has also left him unwary and cautious of all women. He cannot trust that any women would love anything more than money. Even himself.
With that state of mind, Travis meets Cat, the lovely photographer for his book on sailboats. He is drawn to her quiet beauty, but of course assumes that she is like most of the other women he has known. Women who are only interested in him for his vast fortune. He desperately wants to believe otherwise, but he has been hurt before.

Cat and Travis' pasts hurts come in the way of their blossiming love. Past betrayals make Travis hurt Cat in an unforgivable manner. Alone and afraid, Cat loses something deeply cherished, something which means the world to her. Only the love from Travis can make the wronged, right.
This is an excellent novel, which will take you and sweep you off your feet. I recommend it wholeheartedly. You won't regret it.

Could not put this romance book down once I picked it up!

This is the best contemporary I have read in a very long time. (For the last few years, I've been reading about three to four novels a week. 70% are historicals and 30% contemps.)
From the moment I opened the book, I was hooked. I actually forgot to eat my supper! For someone who lives to eat (as opposed to most folks who eat to live) this is a good indicator of the books captivating pull. When I went outside to tell my man that I forgot to fix dinner, he asked why I had to bring my novel with me. I didn't even realize I was holding it! It was as if I didn't want to leave the euphoric cloud that my head was in. The wonderful world that Elizabeth Lowell created in her book To the ends of the earth. From the minute Cat(Cathy) and Travis meet, they are instantly attracted to each other. How refreshing! I didn't have to wait until the middle of the book for them to admit to themselves that they liked the other. When I meet someone, I know within five minutes whether I'm attracted to them or not. No wonder then that I was instantly drawn to this book.
By the time I got to work the next day, I was bad off. Since I had stayed up late reading, I had gotten very little sleep. I actually thought about calling in sick so I could finish reading this book. I don't smoke but took cigarette breaks during work just so I could read another few pages! Same thing during bathroom breaks and lunch breaks. So don't say I didn't warn you. Do not pick this book up to read until after you have done your chores. Preferably, read it over the weekend. There are no boring parts in this book. No wonder I couldn't put the book down. And the sensual heat that these two were able to generate... hoo-boy! Nothing too graphic but just enough sexual tension to keep me turning those pages.
I went through all my emotional ranges. I was intrigued, excited, heated, and yes, my eyes got a little watery at one point. I even felt anger at Travis and if the book was written any other way, I might have given this book 4 and a half stars because he can be such a jerk sometimes. Thank goodness Cat knows how to handle him, where the door is and how to use it. Thank goodness she's no doormat. Far, far from it. In most books, I always feel that the guys never suffers enough for their misdeeds but in this book, I truly felt that Travis learned his lesson. I thought the Author handled that part very well. Most of all, I really identified with Cat. In most romances, I usually remember the hero & rarely the heroine. Cat is the exception. I can't think of any heroine that was more strong, determined and plucky than Cat.
Travis learns that money can't buy hapiness but I did buy a little happiness when I bought this book. This is why I read romance.

Why would she put up with his treatment of her?

This was the first Elizabeth Lowell I read and I was absorbed by it. I did enjoy her writing style and thought that some of her images were almost poetic; for example, sailing a boat across the incandescent eye of God. However, I wonder whether Cat has any self-respect at all. How could she go back to someone who attempted repeatedly to buy her affection and her time, called her a whore, attempted to buy their child, abandoned her and left her flat on her back in bed, and thinks that money can buy anything? She should have told him to take a hike--or rather, a sail. Being called a whore by someone you love is the equivalent of physical violence and is absolutely not acceptable under any circumstances. This problem marred what otherwise would have been a fine book. And why the heck was she supporting her ditsy mother? Couldn't her "green angel" have put some pressure on the rich friend who was going to marry her in a few months?

I love this book the only thing wrong with it is ...

If you are in the mood for sexy Aliens saving you and making you there mate this book is for you. I love this book the only thing wrong with it is I would have liked it to be longer. I want a Hades warrior in my life.�I love how much more developed these characters are then the last book and you get to see the chemistry and love grow.

Mate Her, Warriors of Hades book 2. Great follow-up to Breed Her. This book has more substance than the first. There is more character development and chemistry between them. Fun fast read. Hope to see more of the Hades Warriors. What girl wouldn't want to be a pampered princess to some Hades Warriors!
