An Enlightening Read

In her book, Katrina challenges many of the ways in which Tarot readers work with the cards and their clients. She is a strong advocate for a counselling based approach which involves `following' the client, rather than `leading' the client, and being descriptive rather than prescriptive. Let me explain...

`Leading' the client means telling your client what you see in the cards and `leading' your client around the Tarot reading. `Following' the client, on the other hand, means creating the space for your client to interpret the cards and to pick up on the messages that are meant for them. For example, you might draw the Four of Swords. Instead of explaining what this card signifies, you invite your client to give their first impressions of the card and build the reading from there, mirroring and working with the client's personally derived insights and interpretations.

It kind of reminded me of a story I heard where a Tarot reader was set up in a gypsy-style tent and would bring people in, draw a card, and spend the rest of the reading getting the client to interpret the card!

That said, it's not that black-and-white, as is made clear by Katrina. There is still room, as the reader, to provide profound insight, it is just in the sense that it is building from what the client initially sees. For example, the reading might wrap up with the reader then connecting the client's first impressions with the goals and issues that were stated at the beginning of the reading. Thus, the reader adds value by closing the loop and bringing it all together for the client.

Katrina also contrasts descriptive and prescriptive reading styles. Prescriptive reading is where you interpret a card and tell your client what is going to happen or what they must do. The Four of Swords again - "This card is telling you to rest and restore your energy because there are going to be more challenges ahead."

Descriptive reading on the other hand is where you will simply describe what is in the card. Four of Swords - "We see a man lying here, hands in prayer position, in full armour." There are no assumptions or conclusions made, no advice given, no future told. It offers up another invitation for the client to then make linkages between what is seen and what is intuitively known for them. "Oh, that looks like me doing yoga. Yeah, I feel great when I do yoga. Maybe I need to do more of it."

Katrina makes her preferences quite clear:

"I have no interest in predicting the future or telling what decision to make. I believe that disempowers clients and their relationship to their life's journey. I'm looking for guidance that comes from the clients, through their awareness, conscious or subconscious, which knows where they are on their journey and what step is next."

Katrina talks about power in a Tarot reading and who ultimately holds the power, based on the style of reading given. When the Tarot reader prescribes the action or the decision, they hold the power. They are the ones who are right or wrong. When the client decides their own path, they hold the power. It becomes more about their insights and change process, rather than the reader's. "Whose Tarot reading is it anyway?" asks Katrina.

Overall, Transformative Tarot Counselling is a very well written book that presents its ideas and processes in a very clear and smart way. I would recommend this book to experienced Tarot readers who are open to exploring new ways of reading Tarot and engaging with clients. I personally appreciated the opportunity to learn more about Katrina's style and evaluate how I might integrate some of her techniques into my own reading style. And you don't have to subscribe to every one of Katrina's philosophies or approaches to get value from this book.

I would especially recommend this book if you are a Tarot reader who is interested in how you can conduct interactive dialogues with your clients in ways that will engage them in the reading and that will open them up to their own, personal insights. And I would recommend it for those readers who are more naturally inclined to a counselling style of Tarot reading.

Little gem of a book!

In Katrina Wynne's "An Introduction to Transformative Tarot Counseling", the author shares her unique style of tarot reading. Like a counseling session, her style is interactive, combining her insights with the clients own perception of the meaning of the cards. This brings a more personal and deeper meaning to the reading. She tries to "follow" as opposed to "lead" the client to open up their own intuitive relationship with the tarot. Ms. Wynne supports the client and guides them to discovering their own wisdom to help make wanted changes in their lives.

I really enjoyed this little book, especially the chapter on sample readings. Ms. Wynne describes her technique of doing a reading, then walks us through two readings for actual clients. Its exciting to read about this process in action. There is also a step by step checklist included, so you can try it yourself!

Good things come in small packages! Highly recommended!

The Role of the Tarot Reader

Wynne has crammed a wealth of information into an 81 page book! She addresses the transformative aspect of Tarot reading, and the differences between leading a client (essentially interpreting the cards for them) and following a client (essentially guiding them through their process as they interpret the cards for themselves). She discusses things like what exactly transformative counseling is, the art and magic of change, the four stages of magic in a reading, and much more.

Along the way we also read about Jung and the Shadow, the journey of individuation, what skills are needed in transformative counseling, and the responsibilities and ethics involved in being a Tarot reader.

Throughout the book examples are presented, which makes the material presented very easy to assimilate. At the end of the book are sample readings, and a flow chart for the process of Transformative Tarot Counseling.

I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to read with the Tarot (or with any divination modality)!

Im not sure what the Intention of this Book is, but I know that one is NOT to teach.

If you're an expert on Swift closures and all the inherent shortcuts involved with the syntax, you might be good to go. An added plus is if you're not looking for a book to teach, but rather to reinforce what you already know. I have no doubt that the writer of this book is intelligent, and is deft at implementing a functional architecture in Swift. I do doubt however, that he has any intention of helping those that are trying to teach themselves. This book is the author patting himself on the back. Nothing More.

This might make a decent academic paper, but it's a terrible book. Just stick with Apple's Books.

Pros:
- If you have a magnifying glass handy, the content is worth reading- especially if you enjoy constant asides about the wonders of Haskell instead of focusing on the topic at hand. I regret that they didn't have the space to discuss Forth and PDP-11 Assembly Language as well.
- You get to practice your typing when you try to work through the examples on your own.
- The authors have lots of friends willing to write favorable reviews without having read or used the book. Friends are wonderful.

Cons:
- Content is printed in 4 x 5 inch box in the corner of each page. 50% of the book is whitespace. Are you kidding me?
- Many of the examples have not been updated to reflect changes in syntax.
- No index, but there is a lovely list of references at the end. Thank you for submitting your term paper, but please include the index for grading.
- No source code available. Apparently, no one has heard of that newfangled interweb thing with the SauceFridge and the Gothub.
- The text is in an excruciatingly hard to read sans-serif typeface.
- Diagrams are unhelpful and poorly rendered. I don't know what service they're using for a print on demand publisher, but I think they should change the ribbon on their Epson MX-80 every 500 books.

I'd stopped buying books unseen for a while after having been burned on my last half dozen technical book purchases- but given the reputation of the authors, I bought it anyway. I think it's time for another timeout on that.

My Favorite Book On Swift

IMHO this is currently the best written book on Swift. They do an excellent job illustrating the different ways you can use Swift to solve complex problems elegantly and how to avoid some of the situations you'd have to confront in Obj-C. It opens with a chapter on thinking functionally to help the reader shift their mindset to a more functional one, which in turn leads to increased sanity and more legible code. They then continue on a well rounded tour of some basic functional principles and tools.

I cannot recommend this book enough.

A coworker once told me this personal anecdote about sitting on a bench at a zoo in front of the lion enclosure… A couple walked by with a little girl. The little girl pointed and cried in terror, “Ooo! Look at the lions!” Her parents replied, “Yes, the lions are scary, aren’t they?” A little later, a couple walked by with a little boy. The little boy pointed and cried in terror, “Ooo! Look at the lions!” His parents replied, “But we’re not afraid, are we?”

Emer O’Toole’s book Girls Will Be Girls: Dressing Up, Playing Parts and Daring to Act Differently sides with the notion that our gender identities are social constructs: we learn to rehearse and perform our gender roles. And performing is the operative theme. Chapter titles refer to performances: Rehearsing, Playing Dress-up, Out of Costume, Role Play, etc. (And Dr. O’Toole teaches Irish performance studies at Concordia University.)

In this philosophical/sociological treatise, the author analyzes the conflict and interaction between agency (one’s choices) and structure (society). She illustrates the conflict with stories from her life—her progression from a young girl committed to femininity to a young woman questioning her gender role performances—the reasons for them and their utility in the quest for happiness. She presents herself on two occasions conversing with Aristotle, who has said that happiness is the only thing one can desire for its own sake. She points out to him that happiness can only be achieved if you can create a self that goes beyond the boundaries of the structure created by our society.

In describing her performances in real life fashioning a persona who goes beyond custom and bravely encouraging us all to do it, Emer O’Toole is a philosopher, an activist, and an artist who is herself a performer—and in that sense she seems to me the greatest thing since Frida Kahlo—in the sense that Frida Kahlo’s oeuvre, like Emer O’Toole’s, included her lifestyle, her activism, and her persona. Girls Will Be Girls is delightful to read, courageous, seriously unique, and beyond edifying: it is inspirational.

Very nice arrangements, and the solo parts are interesting for the advanced player. I plan to play at least some of these at my church. The free internet downloads that the book mentions include a score and written parts for piano, bass, guitar, and drums for each song. A couple of songs don't have a separate guitar part, but the chords are on other parts. Another reviewer, Dave, said that, "The backing tracks in the clarinet book do not correspond with the written music on about half the songs." I didn't find this to be the case for the alto sax book. He also said that the backing track for the song, "I Saw the Light" is about twice as long as the music. This is also true for this book. However, if you just repeat section one, then repeat section two, and then do the tag, it works. For the first section, put a beginning repeat at the beginning of the measure with the pickup note, measure 4, I believe. Then put an ending repeat at the end of the measure just before the double time. Section two is similar except that the tag substitutes for the end of the repeat of the second section. Work on it a bit and you should be able to get it. Even if you can't get this song working, the rest of the songs are worth the price of the book, so I'm still giving it 5 stars. BTW, this ships from Britain, so it will take a little longer to get here.
